SBE 2 factory crio choke vs aftermarkets

Postby Steele22 » Thu Oct 10, 2013 4:52 pm

Always just shot factory chokes out of my sbe2. Was just wanting some thoughts on going to an aftermarket choke. Which one and why? I shoot 3 1/2 no 2 shot. Usually kent or xperts. Some hevi metal. Thanks in advance for advice

My factory chokes shot good enough to bag birds. Then I got a hevi shot extreme range. It helped because I don't think I had a full choke that was ok for steel. I also got a patternmaster anaconda mid range. I went from about 135-145 pellets at 30 to 160-170 with black cloud #3. The factory choke was good enough but the aftermarkets are noticeably better. I won't use factory chokes anymore. I shot about 2 boxes on paper for testing. The down side is that the aftermarket chokes want less than 1550 fps so kent fasteel is not useable

I had awesome results with Carlson's Waterfowler's pack in my SBEII. They were better than factory chokes but the factory chokes weren't bad at all

I love my hevi shot chokes with the SBEII. Patterns are very full. Personally I like a more open choke, Mid Range is what I shoot 90% of the time.

I've always used the factory chokes in all of my guns but a while back I tried a Kicks high flyer full and the patterns it threw were way better than anything my factory tubes have produced. Sure hate the way they look though. :crying:

Yea I like more of an open pattern myself. How far is the mid range good for? Thanks for all the info guess I'm gonna try one this year. I'm in East Tennessee and usually shooting close shots over decoys but I year leased a rice field in arkie this year. I figure the shots will get extended out there.

The Mid range is good to 50! I like Hevi metal 3'' no.2s! The 3s pattern awesome also, along with the 4s, but i wouldnt push the 3s, or 4s past 40-45! The Extended is awesome as well-Great for Honkers, and snows! I'd say its tightness is close to a Carlsons long range- great between 30-55, but tight inside 25!!

I would love to try the Hevi Shot chokes. However, as far as I can tell they only come ported which kills it for me wanting one.

It's not required to shoot the type of round that the choke is made for correct?

I bet if one goes down a shot size with the increased pellet load, you will see better results than any "snake oil" choke.
Dropping from 2 to 4 shot gives you , get this, 100 more pellets for quick head kills alone. Hudson bay Cree Indian guides use 4 for geese for this reason.

In my experiance factory crio chokes are terrable not even close to most aftermarket chokes. Pick one u like and get much better results than factory. The Carlson 3 pack is a great deal.

Sure it is, I'm shooting an ounce and quarter number two Kent's - 1425fps

ER is a good choke, I just dont feel as comfortable shooting a tight choke. All personal preference, I personally like open chokes, gives me a little room for error.

I have recently done some testing with the factory crio choke in Cylinder and an aftermarket cylinder by Carlson on my M2 which has the same choke and bore configuration as the SBE 2. I like a very open choke when we get the late season divers in. Seems this is counter to what most others shoot divers at, but ours work the decoys good and we get very close shots. The aftermarket gave a much more even spread across the pattern board with fewer fliers, and a rounder pattern in all the useable shot sizes. My extended IC also does better than the factory IC with most shot sizes. With smaller pellets it doesn't make much difference.
