SBE + Patternmaster

Postby BBK » Fri Oct 18, 2013 8:58 pm

Got a patternmaster long range on the way for the SBE1. Anyone have a suggestion for a load that I HAVE to try (pattern), from experience with the combo or just the choke? Completely new to PM, and the wad stripping style. Do they like light payloads or heavy slow payloads? Of course I've got a dozen or so loads on hand to try but I'm always looking for something new.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

I shot them for years and im trying new chokes this year but with a ex range pm mine really liked 3.5 expert 13/8 of 2s and 3in fiochi 11/5 of 1s and 3in fed 11/4 of 4s and 23/4 fed 11/8 4s also in testing the pm chokes in 12 and 10ga I found that the sweet spot is 1250 to 1475fps most of the time

Thank you! So it sounds like my every day load (1400fps federals) should be a good one, since they are really towards the 1375 range. Kind of what I was hoping to see. Also glad to hear fiocchi patterned well, I have two boxes of 3.5" 1 3/8 #1 to try as well, I think they are 1475fps?

Kent 1's is what I use for geese, and it works very well, make are you get the slower speed , fast shells seem to pattern poorly ou of the patternmaster tubes, at least in my experience.

Just my opinion....Patternmaster LR is the most worthless choke I ever got hold of for my HkSBE. I couldnt get any load to pattern through it, no matter what the speed. It would be the last choke I would reccomend.

Sell it and get a Sure Cycle Terror. Nothing patterned in my SBEII like a Terror choke.

I totally agree! I use a .700 Terror in my HkSBE and nothing will out pattern it.

Caveat: I have ZERO experience with a PM choke through an SBE. I have a wealth of experience using PM chokes, however. My experience has been that PM tubes like shot size #1 or larger best with payloads of 1 3/8 or heavier traveling at 1400 or below. My experience with benellis has been that they tend to pattern better with thin-walled, pliable wads, like RSI or B&P wads. That said, if I were shopping loads for that combo. I'd start with Kents (because they use B&P wads), running a 1 3/8 oz load of BB's in a 3" hull. That'll get you a rough 1300 FPS MV and enough payload to make the choke happy.

PM's get a bad rap because speed freaks and light payload geeks try to adapt them beyond their capabilities. I consider the PM a special purpose choke for use under controlled circumstances. With the right load, they're simply magical. With the wrong load, the result looks like an ink blot test.

I have a 1 3/8 oz load that I use that choke with that consistently gives me 90%+ at 50 yds. It is a snow goose eradication program in and of itself.

Would you stay away from 1550 fps and opt for slower shells?

I have shot HeviMetal 3's and 2's ($19/box) using a PM Shortrange choke (30-40yds). The pattern is fantastic and the kill percentage is amazing. That combo even works amazingly well on Specks at 40-50 yards. I have the LR and extra LR chokes for 3 1/2s but so far the birds have been mostly in range. I shoot a SBEII. Hope this helps
Cheers
