I've had great success with Kent shells. Blackclouds seem to take a bit longer to open up the pattern, so I wouldn't use those unless pass shooting, they also have the funny pellets and cause serious bruising to the meat. Maybe those wad-stripper chokes help with them?

I had a few good kills with that 'duck dynasty" #3 high velocity stuff... got those on sale, won't buy 'em again though.

I haven't used the others you have mentioned, but my buddy used the hevi metals for a few seasons and switched to kent after awhile... just for the money they seem to be the best value. I can't get the kents close by so my fall back is federal's cheap stuff... works fine but I will go out of my way to get better shells if heading out to a big hunt.

SC -- Here are a few of my pattern numbers with the shells you mentioned in my gun/choke to give you an idea of what you might expect.

Patterns results from a 12-gauge 3" Remington 870 Special Purpose with a 28" barrel and factory flush Rem-chokes (pattern average of five, 30" post-shot scribed circle, yardage taped muzzle to target, in-shell pellet count average of five, and true choke constriction from bore gauge).

12 GA 3" KENT FASTEEL LOAD
1 1/4 oz #2 steel (155 pellets) @ 1,425 fps
40 YARDS
IC (.009" const.) / pattern 88 (57%)
Mod (.018" const.) / pattern 103 (66%)
F (.037" const.) / pattern 116 (75%)

12 GA 3" FEDERAL PREMIUM BLACK CLOUD FLIGHT-STOPPER STEEL LOAD
1 1/4 oz #2 steel (91 regular zinc plated steel pellets + 53 FS steel pellets = 144 pellets) @ 1,450 fps
40 YARDS
IC (.009" const.) / pattern 88 (61%)
Mod (.018" const.) / pattern 92 (64%)
F (.037" const.) / pattern 113 (78%)

12 GA 3" HEVI-METAL LOAD
1 1/4 oz (101 #2 regular steel pellets + 63 #5 Hevi shot pellets = 164 pellets & flax seeds) @ 1,500 FPS
40 YARDS
IC (.009" const.) / pattern 70 (43%)
Mod (.018" const.) / pattern 93 (58%)
F (.037" const.) / pattern 116 (71%)

12 GA 3" WINCHESTER ELITE BLIND SIDE STEEL LOAD
1 3/8 oz #2 Hex Steel (176 pellets) @ 1,400 fps
40 YARDS
IC (.009" const.) / pattern 85 (48%)
Mod (.018" const.) / pattern 104 (59%)
Full (.037" const.) / pattern 109 (62%)

12 GA 3" WINCHESTER XPERT HI-VELOCITY STEEL LOAD
1 1/4 oz #2 steel (146 pellets) @ 1,400 fps
40 YARDS
IC (.009" const.) / pattern 76 (52%)
Mod (.018" const.) / pattern 106 (73%)
Full (.037" const.) / pattern 118 (81%)

Now you can be the judge, good luck.

You just posted a list of ammo I would not shoot. The Experts are too low quality, the Blindside and Black Clouds are over priced marketing gimmicks, and I don't like the shooting qualities of FastSteel in my gun.

Remington Nitro, Winchester Drylok Super Steel, or Federal SpeedShok would be my choices.
Banded Birds - Mallard / Black Ducks, 3 Jack Miners and 25 AVISE. BW Teal - 2, Wood Ducks - 1, Morning Doves - 1, Snow/Ross - 2 (both reward bands), Canada Geese - 12 (2 neck collars)

Next time you're at the store , pick-up a box of Kent's , sit down in the Isle and take a big breath , read what it says !

Believe what it tells you !........Now , you have the Best load you could buy ! Go out and shoot some patterns with
the choke of your choice and then you'll know why Kent's are so good and reasonably priced ,too

I agree with 3200. One of my favorites is Kent Fasteel 3" 1 1/4oz #1s.

What shells?

Postby BKScripto » Sat Feb 15, 2014 1:33 am

I love Kent Fasteel 1-3/8oz 3" #2 @ 1300fps. I wish I could use less weight but I patterned 1-1/8oz load and was bad out of my gun. Boy is that above load serious thru my double gun though.

In those conditions a good load that will cover it all is Federal Speed Shock 3" 1 1/4 #2 @ 1400 fps
through a good Modified choke. I don't think the gimmicks like BS or BC are worth the extra money. Any quality load that meets those specs will work fine as long as it patterns well in your gun. You will get some cripples at the longer ranges at times with any load.

We had a problem with the drylocks that we tried out last year. We we're noticing the wadding going pretty far, so we retrieved one and about half the pellets we're still inside. We had a case of them like that. Turned out their shotcups we not fully cut as something got screwed up at the factory. Winchester was nice enough to replace it all, they actually gave us some vouchers with which we bought a whole load of Kent shells... don't tell them that though. That was the beginning and the end of the drylocks for us. The cheapo Winchester shells don't cycle very well in my 1187, but I've had good success with them using other guns.

I'll see your pages and raise ya another ten by saying hevi-metal shells are high priced crap!

Honestly I think they work just as well as any other shell, but I haven't shot more than a box of them.

On the X sounds like 25 yd shots to me , I think you are shooting a good choice of shell for that with Heavy Metal ,
with it's ability to spread the pattern wide at close distances and make you seem to be a good shot , doesn't hurt ether ?

If you ever want a shell to reach out to it's pellet's ability , with better patterns , try some Dry Kents ! :lol3:

I have had great success with Hevi Metal, 3" BB's for most of my guns. Daughter shoots 3" 20 gauge #3's thru hers. Love it.

Oh hell, you and Mugz have gone and done it now. BUT seriously,I've killed ducks with 'em at 25 yds and I've killed ducks much further too.

A few years back me and a buddy hit up an outfitter for spring snows. We shot goose for goose the whole three days we were there, he was shooting 3 1/2" hevi-metals, I was shooting 3" kents. Besides being on the pricey side, they worked great for him.

I do believe that if you can shoot well, you can pretty much use whatever shells and do fine. I don't think switching from any one of these shells to any other type will change the outcome of a hunt all that much. They are all popular name brands for a reason, good marketing and good reliable performance.

Most of us choose shells the same way we choose beer... the commercials , the name, and the writing on the can... absolutely nothing to do with whats on the inside!

I choose shells based on how they perform, beer on how it tastes. I drink Mickeys Malt Liquor because of the taste, like home brew. Ned S

Have had great success with hevi metal over the past few years, pattern best out of my guns. Buy a few boxes of each round and test them out, then try a few out in the field and see what works best for you.

Just for the record I shot Winchester Drylocks in 2 3/4, 1 1/4 oz. #3's at 1275 slow fps for several years back in the 90's. Why? because the only gun I had at the time was a wore out Rem 1100 with 2 3/4 chamber. I killed ducks out as far as I ever needed to and held my own with anyone and everyone I hunted with.

With a 6 1/2' pattern at 25 yds , every duck in the flock was in danger and depending on shot size , so was those migrating
South , God only knows how far up !

I bet you can shoot with your eyes closed and be successful , too ? Hey ! that needs to be in your marketing ploy too ?
