New Hevi Steel patterns?

Postby clymerfowler » Mon Jul 28, 2014 10:57 am

Has anyone shot the new hevi steel yet. I was thinking about giving the 3 inch 1 1/4 ounce 1s a try. I usually shoot winchester 1 1/4 ounce 1s and the pattern good out of my patternmaster. Just thinking of trying something new. Yes i know its just plain steel like winchesters, kents, federals, ect...

I haven't patterned them and hell I'll never buy any of them but I would be more interested in a chrono reading on them. Just to see.

I got some 3 1/2s #3 1 3/8 that I'm going to try and pattern this weekend. Gonna see how they do in my SBE with a Rob Roberts T2 choke.

bought a case of hevi steel 3 inch 1 1/4 number 1s. 142 dollars from macks. haven't put it on paper yet, but I cut one open and it had 136 pellets. I have been shooting kent silversteel number 2s the past couple years. figured id give em a try and that price was tough to beat. free shipping is great.

Also the pellets were uniformly round. saw one pellet that had an abnormality. we shall see how they do.

I haven't seen any in the local stores as of yet, but they should be showing us soon. When they do make their appearance, I will buy a box or two and run some patterns. Given what I know about them (standard round steel pellets at 1500fps), I would expect that they'd be somewhere on a par with Winchester Dryloks and Remington Nitro Steel.

I think most of the venom being spewed over this load is due to EMI's less than stellar record of marketing and advertising. I can understand how many people are put off by this, since most of the recent products of EMI have been poor performers when stacked against standard steel products of good quality. But, I feel that they deserve a chance before they are given the thumbs up or thumbs down.

I feel slightly sorry for a man who has never patterned his gun, who has no idea how far his chosen load will retain killing penetration. But I'm extremely sorry for the ducks he shoots at beyond the killing range of his gun and load - Bob Brister

I think they are quickly becoming aware that they are not going to be around much longer if they don't come up with a good steel load.

I would be interested in patterns just because of the price. I was looking to buy a case of 3" Kent's but might consider the hevi steel if performance is similar.

I patterend a few 3" #3s of Hevi Steel with my SBEII and Kicks High flyer IC and MOD chokes and they patterened basically the same as the Kent loads I have used for years and have shot LOTS of ducks with! I bought a case of 3" #3s Hevi Steel mainly because they were cheaper than a case of kents but not by much and they go 75fps faster and they pattern the same so why not!

^^^

Those are a bit on the thin side, especially with the 3 1/2" load.

How did they look, even pellet dispersion or ragged with gaps/holes in them?

The patterns looked good with the pellets evenly distributed but to thin for my liking.

I have still yet to shoot this shell, EMI has been busy filling orders at retailers, and it is not up on our staff website for us to order yet. I had some in hand a couple months back when I was in Oregon for a calling contest, but for some reason, they wouldn't let me bring it back on my flight home. From the folks that I have talked to, the interest is really in the 1's, which I will be shooting at snow geese this year. As soon as I am able to get a some ordered, I will be getting some, and if I can find time I will try and put a pattern on paper, not a bunch of time to spare at the moment lol. I will also be testing some out during our duck and goose seasons. From the shows that I have been at, (none where I was working for Hevi) the response to the price point has been pretty good, with the case price running right with most steel shells.

I got around to patterning the hevi steel 3" and 3.5 in 3s thru my grand passage im and carlson ex full in my browning silver.Patterns were shot at 40 yards. Results are average of 6 shots in a 28in circle. The gp im averaged 166 hits with the 3" and 174 with the 3.5. The ex full averaged 160 with the 3in and 120 with the 3.5s.

I looked yesterday at our Cabelas and Gander Mountain and it's not on the shelves yet. Thought I'd grab a couple of boxes to pattern, chrono and cut open.

But I did come home with 5 cases of Herters trap loads for $50 a case after discount.

I did not chrony that load. I do have two other test loads to compare it to. All loads run out of a Browning A5 with Hevi Shot extended range tube.

Hevi-Metal "BB" 1 1/2 oz 1500fps - 120 pellets (74 steel pellets and 46 hevi shot pellets) - 76 pellets inside 30" circle at 40 yards - 63% - This load also seemed to want to pattern high. The bottom of the pattern was left with a lot of holes.

Kent Fast Steel "BB" 1 3/8 oz 1550fps - 100 pellets (all uniform steel) - 86 pellets inside 30" circle at 40 yards - 86% - This was by far the most uniform pattern with the most hits.

After patterning Hevi Steel, Hevi Metal, and Kents, I will be going with Kents. I wouldn't be scared to run Hevi Steel though. It was a good performer, just not as good as Kents.
