Hevi Steel speeds

Postby arey60 » Sat Aug 09, 2014 10:12 pm

Was looking at these. How are they getting 3" 1 1/4 to run at 1500 fps when the max all other brands is 1450 fps for the same load?
Any chrono data?

I wondered that too. Hard to believe unless they know something that Federal, Remington, Winchester, and Kent don't know.

Probably not a true 547 grain payload.

There are a lot of factors when it comes to pressures in a shot load. Find a way to reduce the pressure and you can increase the speed. Some of those factors are the shot composition, size and /or, density. Those effect how easily the shot column is forced through the barrel, often due to reduced friction. Figure out the correct burning rate to match and sometimes it all comes together.

My first question would be: is this an honest 1-1/4" load ???
If so then it an honest 1500 fps MV ???

Given their track record I would imagine that it is neither.

Soooo… by my math 183 #3 pellets is about 1 3/16 oz steel. A little light.

With the variances in the pellet sizes and densities you can't really go by the number of pellets, the only true method is by weighing it. 538 grains is not as advertised at 547 grains, just another bunch of propaganda from EMI. I suspect that they may be high on the velocity as well but no one has confirmed that as yet.
