A 3" load of Hevi-shot #4, or Wingmaster HD, etc. If you mean steel, I'd go with a 3" load of 2's from Kent if you can get them to pattern.

These Winchester Xtended Range SWXR2032 3" 20 ga #2 shot loads should work great.

$177.41 for a case of 100 shells is a pretty good buy for 12g/cc loads.

I'm getting nice patterns out of Remington Nitros.. I like them because the are a 1 oz load as compared to most other steel loads which are 7/8 oz at about the same speed. No they are not as fast as the Kents but it seems like the extra pattern density helps to compensate for the speed difference... I tried some federal #1s once but just could not get them to pattern. Beyond about 25 yards I started to get holes big enough for a goose to fly through.

In all honesty I have not tried the HD, Bismuth or other high performance stuff because I have not needed to.

Assuming by "best" you are talking about best performance - the best 20 ga goose shell I know of is a 1-1/8 oz load of TSS 8s or 7s going 1325 fps.

Kent impact 1 1/8 #3.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!
