Let the patterning begin - Weatherby SA-08

Postby RefugeRat4Life » Tue Aug 12, 2014 2:20 pm

Alright... so I have been blindly shooting the cheapest load (Fiocchi 1/18oz #2 @ 1500 fps) for the last 3 seasons since I picked up my new Weatherby SA-08 shotgun. I am now going to test 12 different loads. Here are the particulars:

Shotgun - 12 gauge Watherby SA-08 Black Synthetic
Choke - Carlsons Waterfowl Mid Range Extended Choke - Modified .705
Loads - See Picture( Not shown - 3", 1 1/4oz #2 1400 FPS Federal Speed Shok and 3", 1 1/8oz #3 Fiocchi 1500 FPS)

I will be taking two shots, one at 30 yards and one at 40 yards, for each load with a standard 30" circle. I will also be using a fixed rifle rest so the shots are always at the same spot.

I will post up my results with pictures. Should be heading to the property on Sat or Sun.

OP,

Any updates on the patterning? I recently picked up the same shotgun, and was curious to the outcome since I havent had the chance to take it out yet

I would think that 1 oz of 3''s at 1550 flps would be a better load which will penetrate to kill to 50.4 yds. Use B's for the 3 rd shot. Ned

Actually I have been shooting that same gun / choke combo for the last three years at mainly mallards and gadwalls. The very best performing load I have patterned and used in my gun for shots 30 to 50 yards is .....wait fo it....Federal
Speed Shok 3" 1 1/4 oz #2 steel loads at 1400 fps.

No 1550 fps factory load I have tested patterned as well in my gun. Most birds are killed around 35 yards DRT.

Hey, sorry I havent been able to follow up on my original post! Had some other stuff going on in my life but I should be able to get this done soon. Just picked up a Kicks High Flyer that I will be patterning with as well.

Stay tuned!

I did the same thing many years ago and found out that some pattern low, or left and some near center.....
when aiming at the center of the 30" diameter target.

There will be holes in your targets but the general mass is what I was looking for, along with POI.
Point of aim and point of impact do not always work out. One reason I shoot #5, #2 and BB's in my one shotgun.

Most were around 70% patterns.........at the longer ranges.

Good luck
