I was working on patterning a duck load today and decided to give these Rem shells a try.
These were the results:
Benelli Montefeltro with a Trulock .700 Pass shooting choke
1 1/4 Rem = 153 #2 Steel Pellets @ 1400fps
3 Shots at 25 yards
119 hits in a 30" circle, 77%
132 hits in a 30" circle, 86%
132 hits in a 30" circle, 86%
Doesn't this seem like poor results? I would think it would pattern tighter than this at 25 yards.
Are you sure that there was that many pellets in the load? I have patterned that same load, and always found that since they add a little bit of buffer looking material in the end of the shell, the pellet count is slightly less than normal. Mine always come out between 138-142.
The shell I opened had 153 pellets in it plus about 14 or so plastic buffer lumps....don't know what else to call them. Perhaps that was a high pellet count.
Not sure what you are looking for here. At 25 yards if you center the bird it will be mincemeat and worthless. A full choke at 25 yards seems inappropriate at best.
If you can hold 70 percent at 40 yards you should be OK.
25 yards was the max range I had available. Wouldn't this pattern be at 50% or less at 40 yards? I'm more or less wondering if there is a way to tell how the pattern will progress at further yardage.

I would put my money on that pattern being almost useless at 40. I would of expected a 100% pattern in a 20" ring at 25 with that setup. I would guess your way over choked for a spaghetti barrel but I will be honest, I don't have enough experience with them.

I don't try to extrapolate shotgun patterns so I have no answer there. What do other loads ptters look like at 25 yards in your gun. Also I would try a modified to see if you are over choking that load.
I'd expect to see a 25yd pattern like that from a Cylinder or skeet choke, but not from a .700". First thing I'd do is put a micrometer/caliper on that tube and see what the constriction actually is.
If the constriction is what it says it is, then I'd try another load; that combo you have is not going to hold together for 40 yards shots. Or, try a more open choke tube. Sometimes over-constricting a load will cause it to open up.....
Here are some of my pattern numbers with that load in my gun/chokes.
Pattern results from a 12-gauge 3" Remington 870 Special Purpose with a 28" barrel and factory flush Rem-chokes (pattern average of five, 30" post-shot scribed circle, yardage taped muzzle to target, in-shell pellet count average of five, and true choke constriction from bore gauge).
i have found that speeds upto 1525 fps work the best in those skinny bores but the payload also makes differrence too(smaller payloads pattern better). but pattern imrove as you go slower then the 1525 fps. i have found that the 23/4 inch loads up to b's to pattern the best with speeds of 1380 fps to 1475 fps. large payloads just seems to really change the hormonics of bbl and patterns do suffer. with bigger shot open bore chokes works great...with shot up to 2's improved mod from carlson choke company done the trick with every benelli i have owned and tested but i like the patterns to be on tight side , my first shot is at the back of flock so all shots average right at 30 yards.
know all my buddies have them i used them for year of testing and then into fall and then sold them as used gun from my shop. they can be finiky but try the kent factory loads of 11/8 in 23/4 .....the bnp wads(kent loads) seem to work better over other factory wads. if you reload rsi wads work perty darn good along with bnp wads and certain multi-metal wad loads.
