my delima

Postby decoycarver » Tue Aug 19, 2014 8:55 pm

I have a 20ga. model 1100 youth-I reload on my Mec.600 jr-I use AA hulls, 209 primer and red dot powder, powder charge does not eject shells-still want light skeet loads, used AA replacement wads but they were too long fot AA hulls-a Friend gave me 2 bags of Remington wads they work great-but powder charge still not ejecting shells-tired of a semi single shot !!
Please send a formula for 209 primers, Red dot powder & AA Hulls-Thanks.A nice skeet load that will eject from 1100 Remington 20 ga.

Which Barrel Gas Port/ports is in the 1100 barrel. 20ga needs a slower powder generally. 7/8oz, RXP20, cci209, 15.5gr Green dot. 7/8oz, RXP20, win209, 16.5gr 800x. 15gr universal. 16gr WSF. 18gr Herco. Hunting loads might be required to get reliable cycling. 7/8oz, RXP20, win209, 19gr longshot

Red Dot is really not even a recommended powder with 20 ga loads.
As Baltz stated you need slower burning powders in 20 ga loads, Green Dot being one of the faster powders you see listed for it.

This is a factory AA Target duplicate load from one the last editions of Winchester's own published manual before Hodgdon took them over.
Winchester AA 20 ga 2 3/4" hull
Winchester 209 primer
16.5 grains Winchester Super Field powder
Winchester WAA20 wad
7/8 oz lead shot
1200 fps @ 11,200 psi
There are many other choices of powder and wads, but the above load should function any autoloader out there.

In reloading rounds for the 20ga., I've found Longshot to meet the results I was looking for.

That's just a bad combination of components for your goal. I know you want to use what you have on hand, but... If you want to use the winchester hulls and wads at 7/8 oz, I'd go with a win209 and 16 grains of Unique. I know this load cycles in my 1100. Gives you 1200fps at 11000psi.

With the remington wads I'd go with 15 grains of Universal and a win209. This load also cycles in my 1100. Lists at 1189fps and 10500psi. If you shoot a lot and don't want to clean your gun as often (which can be vital with light loads in an 1100) you could try 13.5 grains of International with a win209 and the remington wads. Supposedly gives you 1175fps and 10500psi, but I have never loaded/tested this load so I can't guarantee it will cycle.
say what?

Switch powders. Red dot is no longer recommended for 20ga. Green dot is what I used with an 1100.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

Green dot isn't recommended for 20 anymore, either. For field loads, longshot is phenomenal. Over targets, I still use green dot, but Alliant says not to, save in 3/4 oz loads.

You are correct cannon. But when I loaded last, probably 3 years ago, they still had green dot loads for 7/8 with federal hulls. Win and Rem were not recommended except for one Win load for 3/4.

What do you want to bet it was the guys shooting Sleeved/tube guns that got the Green Dot loads pulled.

Absolutely. I still run it for 7/8 oz loads in gun clubs. Can't say that it's safe for a gun, but then I've got a decent stock of it on hand, so . . .
