Repainting Hot Buys into Divers

Postby BobF » Sun Nov 27, 2011 6:47 pm

I needed some divers for my spread since I have been seeing them on the Susquehanna River lately. 2 Kids in college and a junior in HS means not a lot of extra $$, so I decided to redo some old GHG Hot Buys. A can of bedliner and some white and blue paint and some yellow nail polish and I now have some Buffies and some Blue Bills.

Used them yesterday...worked great...had Mergansers and even a Canada land in them.

When you were doing the white did you use spray or regular paint. Did you tape it off? Ive been thinking of doing the same

The white was some old exterior grade flat house paint I had already. We used a paintbrush to apply it and actually just followed some mold marks on the hot buys. The blue is a test size can I got from Lowes and the yellow eye was a 2 dollar bottle of nail polish. The gray on the bluebill back is just white that I dry brushed on so it would be real lite over the black.

Overall the repaint cost me about $10 since I already had the white paint.

So far so good. The rubber adds a little texture from the bedliner .

The bills on the buffies are much too blue for my liking. I would hit em with a black sharpie or paint pen, and then rub it in with you finger. I've done this before, it will look much better. Do a google image search for reference pics. The Broadbills look great!

Nice job!!!
Get yourself some rust color primer and you will have a few redheads. I wish I had a pic of the redheads I did to some really old Carrylite decoys.
Divers are so easy to paint, unlike trying to touch up worn mallard decoys. If you do any kind of diver hunting in your area, you need to just to paint old mallards, and replace them with new mallards. Great job!

If i have a choice Im not buying hot buys to paint as divers. Im buying divers and touch em up as needed. But the hb's do work great as fillers and cheap repaints.

Did you strip off the original paint or just go over it.

Not to hijack, the op may have his own way, but i just take sand paper, rough it up all over, wash with soap and water, paint. Flat clear coat if you choose. Helps keep from chipping. Some worry about shine, however i have not noticed any problems.
