I made 2 sets (or strings) of Y-boards for my eiders. The shadows are made from 3/8" and 1/2" plywood and they are oversized, which makes them heavy. There are 3 shadows per Y-board.

I used 1x3 strapping for the boards, and attached the 'wings' to the lead board using 3" strap hinges.
The biggest difficulty I had was getting them to float properly, not only due to the weight, but to even out the load so they would lie flat on the water.

I ended up adding (using adhesive caulking or gorilla glue) 1" x 2 1/2" strips of pink foam (of an appropriate length, based on how much each one needed to increase bouyancy) to each of the 3 boards.
This took awhile and my swimming pool sure came in handy for all of the float-testing.

Good luck !
