Anyone use Dakota X-Treme Mallard Decoys?

Postby cknollman » Thu Mar 21, 2013 10:28 pm

I have read lots of reviews and they seem to be outstanding. They are very expensive so I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on them before I purchased some. Thanks

I really like them, but I would wait for the 2013 model. They redid the hens. I keep mine in a 12 slot bag because they are so expensive. I would love if they had a hen upgrade package.

In all honesty they are really overated. GHG Progrades hold their paint just as good if not better.

Hard to beat the ProGrades.

That picture of the hen mallard decoy....is that the leucistic plumage color version?

I run all GHG and GHG progrades and this last year I picked up a dozen Dakota's and there is no comparison between the two. The Dakota's look far more realistic and move alot better on the water. The Dakota mallards next to my pro grade mallards made the GHG look unnatural. I keep the Dakota's in a 12 slot bag and paint holds up just fine. If you're hunting hard your decoys will lose paint over time but not enough for the ducks to notice. They're definatly worth it

From my experience id rather go with dakotas..everyone says oh well ghg pro grades are fine..ya but they really arn't that much cheaper..cost what 50-60 per 6..when you can go to rogerssportinggoods and get a dozen dakotas for 133...the difference isn't that big..but that quality of dakotas is...not to mention their great customer service..if you want customer service and a company that actually stands behind their product don't even bother with ghg..but that's just my personal experience..im sure people have had better luck with ghg then me

I broke a keel on a GHG prograde and emailed GHG sned pics of busted decoy, and 4 days later I had a new prograde... no problem from GHG customer service for me.

on an other note, I've never had to deal with Dakota's CS. I have dakota full body ducks and geese and love them. They look great and really are much more durable compared to any other decoy hands down.

I really like my Dakota decoys, had no problems with the paint or the flocking coming off. I just wish they were smaller

No, those are actually the original model from 5 or 6 years ago

Hey everyone, I am new to this website, well not really. After months of just reading different forums trying to gain more knowledge, I finally decided to create my own account.
To cknollman: I am in the same boat. For the last season I have been debating on if the Dakota x-treme mallard floaters are worth the $$$. I love how the flocked drakes look, but the hens... not so much. After much reading on this particular topic it seems like the vast majority of people LOVE their dakotas. As long as I have been hunting I have been a loyal GHG user. All of my decoys are GHG. I personally like them a lot. As of now though I am interested in the dakotas. My GHG are fine, which consists of the original hotbuys, and the new prograde mallards, along with life size blue bills, ringnecks, and pintails, but I am seeking new mallard decoys. So all of yours posts are also very beneficial to me as I will spend the next 6 months deciding if I should buy my first dakota decoys. Thanks for reading!

I messaged Dakota X-Treme and they replied saying that the 2013 models would be out early summer.

Just curious... is the 2013 model only an upgrade for the hens? or do you guys think they are redoing both sexes. Not like they need to on the drakes because they already look great, but who knows, they might change something little here or there just for marketing purposes.

My understanding is they are only changing the hens.

I completed my switch to all Dakota's last year, I have the first version they made and the '12 version. I have had no issues at all with them when I first got them I put them in slotted bags but as time went on I just started throwing them into regular decoy bags and have had no issues with my paint. Before these I had GHGs and the paint sucked I was constantly repainting decoys and doing major touch up after every season. I have not had to touch up any of my Dakota's so far and I do not see it happening anytime in the future. I will keep buying the Dakota's until something better comes along in my opinion.

I've been hunting over mine for 4 years this season. Flocked heads are starting to show some wear but it's to be expected. I keep them in a slotted bag and they stay nice. Great looking decoy.

only problem I have had is the flocking on the heads is super fragile. Comes off with ease. They are pretty heavy too for the guys who like to keep the weight down.

odd, I've found Dakota's flocking to be MUCH more durable than any other brands' flocking.

my dakota ducks and geese still have perfect flocking, while my GHG, redhead, and Final approach dcoy all have some flocking chipped, pealed, and rubbed off. and when I hunt my decoys I usually use them all at together. so its not like they get used less or more.
