24 Canvasbacks: finally finished

Postby Mean Gene » Mon Apr 01, 2013 11:09 am

This decoy carving/painting stuff would go a lot quicker if life would quit interrupting me. It took a month, but I finally finished carving, flocking and painting these 24 canvasbacks. What's my reward?...this week I get to start on 24 bluebills and one specialty project.

I'm pretty happy with how these turned out. 4 of the drakes and 2 of the hens are headed to the Ducks Unlimited dinner here this weekend to try and find a new home. Hope they like'em. I see in the picture that one of the drakes looks like he has white eyes. Hmm, maybe he partied too much here in the shop last night, I don't know. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say it's just camera flash glare 'cause his eyes are definitely red close up.

Finished product (drakes):

Your airbrush technique is really coming along, those hens look very good. I'm anxious to hear about this "specialty project". If there is anything in particular that you want Caleb or I to demonstrate when you get here just let us know and we will make sure to have things set up.

Definitely want to get some tips on airbrushing/blending. I've never been a painter, so this is all new to me.

They look great Gene !

I was wondering if you used a paint brush on the drakes, and only used the airbrush on the hen details.

Paint lines look nice and crisp. Nice work !

On the drakes I brushed the white and airbrused the rest.

Hens are all airbrush.

They look even better in person. Caleb and I got to see them first hand yesterday and they are really nice well built decoys. It was great spending the day with Gene and his wife yesterday, swapping a few stories and spending the afternoon driving around the country side showing him the area.

Did you use glass eyes or paint them?

Those do look absolutely great.
I see I'm gonna have to rethink what I'm doing with this decoy thing.

Not that I have any intention of doing it for money, but I really do need some good water dekes, and it seems there may be a much quicker way to achieve it than I thought!

Those are great looking decoys. Are they carved out of foam or something else. Wish I lived closer I would like to see how you build them.

Foam decoys with hardeners.

The heads are done with the sandwich method, so they have plywood in the bill. I form the bill over that with Apoxie Sculpt.
