Redhead Decoy

Postby cwsmith » Mon Apr 08, 2013 12:20 am

Hey all,

I did a repaint on an old Flambeau to a redhead. It's mostly "finished" but am looking for some detail suggestions. I know I have a few places to clean up around the edges, just didn't want to smear still-drying paint. If anyone with more experience can give some suggestions that would be great!

Looks pretty good to me, just seems real shinny , maybe just the photo, but it has a glare to it.

Is that an old mallard?

Colors look spot on but I'd agree that it does look a little shiney.

took picture with wet paint still on it and under pretty heavy light in my shop, probably why it's so shiny. good to know the colors are spot on since i am colorblind! haha

My dad always said " the color of the fishing lures are more for the fisherman then the fish"

Not sure what type you used, but if your happy with it, that's all that matters till the ducks tell you other wise

I repainted some old mallards I bought for a buck a piece , to give me something to do for cabin fever !! I used acrylic , have not clear coated yet, waiting on some weeks of warm weather.

8 drakes and 4 hens.

The only thing I suggest is going with auto primer red /burnt umber your duck looks a bit too bright red might just be the lighting though.

here is a pic of some herters redheads I repainted a few months back.

looks like you are on the right track, I would not worry too much about the ragged edges. Just an fyi I find that when the paint is a little wet it is a good time to blend adjacent colors when the real birds have transitions in color (usually best when only one color is wet, the others are dry). Almost a dry brushins effect.

have fun
