Paint detail?

Postby teal12 » Tue Jul 30, 2013 8:29 am

I am preparing to reprint some old mallards as divers but being my first time doing so I'm not sure how much detail is needed. Planning on mostly blue bills as that is what I see most but also a fee red head and possibly a few buffer head. And suggestions on type of paint, colors, and painting methods would be great. Thank you

If it were me (and I assume your old mallards are plastic) I'd clean them really good, scuff them up with sandpaper, and then paint the proper colors using Flat enamel spray paint. I would create cardboard templates to use with the spray paint (depending on which species you are painting, there will be a variety of templates needed) and a couple of coats should do the trick.

Using templates is good way to have all of the decoys look the same and if you save them, repainting every year or two will be an easy process.

Thanks I never thought of doing that. Is there and real need in going into great detail on diver decoys?

No.

Paint them black. Paint a white stripe across the middle of the body and they will hunt. I like to put more effort into mine but the black and white is all that is really needed. By the time the ducks are close enough to see the minor details your blasting them anyways.
