another starter question on wood decoys

Postby jakefromflorida » Sat Sep 14, 2013 6:30 pm

I've done some research on foamers, I'm skewed torwards cork/wood decoys first. I've done some rough research regarding the process and am going to give it a try after season this year.

For a alternative to a band saw I could use a coping saw or draw knife. Then I would need some type of sealant and of course paint. Down the road possibly a wood burner. What are some other things I'm missing? Just the necessities since I'm just starting. Thanks guys.

A coping saw will work great on Foam and Cork, but you'll be quite limited on a wooden block as far as how much you'll be able to remove. You can remove large pieces with a really sharp handsaw, after that, if you can hold the block in a vise (either install the keel with good screws or use a temporary block) you can get good results with a sharp chisel and a mallet. After that a sharp gouge and a big rasp file will move you farther along.

Good luck !
