Using Mallard Decoys Where They're Rare

Postby canis » Sun Sep 29, 2013 6:55 pm

I hunt in Southeast Texas in an area where mallards are few and far in between, but lots of other species flourish. Should I still use mallard decoys, or focus more on the local species? The main reason for asking is that mallard dekes are much cheaper, and if they'll still pull the birds, why not?

What are you trying to get to decoy? What's the environment you are hunting? I ask because if you are thinking about throwing 3 dozen mallards out in big water to shoot Canvasbacks....it aint gonna happen.
But you are targeting woodies and teal in a small pond or something, you'd be ok

If you used mostly hens I think you could get away with it.

It's a saltwater marsh on the coast, but not many divers where I hunt. Mostly gadwall, pintail, spoonies, maybe a wigeon or two. Just about every puddle duck but mallards seems like.

Then you'd be fine...I don't think it'll set off any alarms....but put the word out with your relatives to hook you up for all birthdays ,fathers day and Christmas....you can accumulate exactly what you need quick on their dime
