How many decoys do you own?

Postby txhunter90 » Tue Oct 15, 2013 9:15 pm

Just thought it would be interesting to see how many decoys everybody actually owns. If this is a topic that has been stared recently I will delete. Searched nothing came up. Image
This is just a small portion. We have over 200 decoys.

Nice lines and lift!

Canadas
Eight dozen BFs
Three dozen GHG Pro Grade Canada shells
Dozen BF Sleeper shells
Six Heavy Hauler Cupped and Committed Canadas
Eight GHG Pro Grade Canada floaters

Ducks
Ten dozen GHG Mallard shells
Three dozen Deadly Decoy socks
One dozen GHG Mallard FBs
Two dozen Dakota Mallard floaters
One dozen GHG Pro Grade Mallard floaters
Dozen Bluebill floaters
Two dozen GHG Pro Grade Pintail floaters
Dozen GHG Teal floaters
Mallard Machine
About Fifteen spinners

I think that is it. There are few more miscellaneous decoys but I can't remember. No pictures. All stored in the trailer.

I own quite a few, but...use as few as possible in my rig, sometimes only 6 magnum size mallards are better than 3 dozen regular size, especially late season.

Too many...

I own at least 300 duck decoys of various brands and that's not counting what my partners own. Here we very seldom have the opportunity to hunt the "X" and birds have been shot at so much by the 2-3 dozen decoy spreads that it becomes a safety in numbers game.

I do own an unusually high number of pintail and teal decoys compared to mallard decoys. Gives the something different to look at.

Thanks

200 foamers and climbing. I hunt every duck that flys in Washington and need a lot of species specific decoys. Otherwise it would be 12 goose floaters and two dozen duck floaters. I cast my own decoys which makes it a lot cheaper than buying foamers.

Way the heck too many, especially the however many dozen GHGs I've held onto with the likely false hope I might want to repaint them someday. Haven't let much go since The Great Decoy Shed Purge of '04, when 2,000 rags, 1,200 THP and hundreds of Northern Flight windsocks, 800 plastic semi-cones and gosh knows how many fliers and kites went to the parish dump. What a grand day that was.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

Just imagine making weights for 3,000 floaters.

Our strategy has changed some, but we used to run over 20 dozen to a blind. Ten blinds start to add up.

We used to leave them all out, but that is not entirely the case now.

Luckily we don't run all of the decoys we own anymore. We also make our own weights. ImageImage

Thanks guys. Those are 5oz weights. A buddy of mine made the mold for me. We drew it up so that the mono we use would be a slip fit through the weight.

We prefer the wider weight because they anchor really well for the weight. Some of our decoys stay out for weeks at a time. High wind and ice can play hell on them.

I appreciate it. When our ice melts it will break into sheets. It's amazing what a drifting sheet can drag decoy wise. The egg weights are great for not gathering trash or mud.
