I normally keep them separated by species when I hunt the lake. But when I hunt refuges I scout the closed zone and they are always mixed. Good question.
Look what everyone else is doing and do the opposite. Birds get accustomed to seeing the same thing day after day so you have to change your game in order to bag a few more of them. Watching birds is the best thing you can do so when you get out on the water you know what they want and you can mimic that in your spread.
