Repainting hotbuys

Postby Stish85 » Fri Feb 21, 2014 1:13 pm

Hey guys.

I have upgraded my mallard spread since getting my hot buys years ago. I have about 3 dozen of them laying around that no longer get used. I would like to repaint them to something more useful. I know some of the hens I will just be darkening up to use as black ducks. But I was just wondering what others have done and what looks best. I was thinking GE of Buffs at first, but I just can't get over the difference in head style. Pics would be great otherwise just what you have done that looks decent.

Assuming your have mallard HB's, you'd be right in questioning the wisdom of painting them as divers.

Puddlers and divers have very different head AND body shapes and sizes. It would be even worse than painting wigeons to look like gadwalls........

Do a search, there are threads every year with people repainting deeks.

most common repaint I see are blue bills and red heads of the hot buys

OK I will try a search.

I agree that the body shape is different as well. I would think that is more of a hunter concern than a duck concern though, still I atleast want them to look reletively close.

You will kill birds over repaints.

Heck my father in law still swears by old bottles dunked in tar with a little white on there sides.
