What kind of decoys do you use?

Postby goldhunter470 » Fri Jul 01, 2005 7:45 pm

Howdy! New to this site and this may have been asked already but what kind of decoys do you use and what kind of luck do you have? I use Featherlite inflateables and have had pretty good luck. I like them because they are light, compact and have great movement. They also are photoprinted so they look just like real ducks. Also, how big of a spread do you have?
Input that enables becomes thoughts that smother.

I have a doz ghg mallards and a doz G&H green wing teal. I like the G&H better, more life like and hold up better. I hike in and out of public land so i don't Have to big of spread. I also have a Spinning mallard, and an Air Lucky mallard. I plan to add 1/2 doz of sprig.
.....you've got to ask yourself a question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?

Have about 7 doz. 2 dozen G&H, dozen Hotbuys, 2 dozen lifesize GHG (never will buy again. They will not be in my bag in the upcoming season.) 1/2 dozen flambeau feeder butts, and a 1/2 dozen GHG teal. Will be adding more G&H and eliminating the GHG. G&H are the best decoys on the market, but ya pay for em.

I have 4 dz. flambeau magnums that have worked well. I also have 2 dz. GHG that I really like. I'm slowly converting my whole spread to GHG.

I have roughly 11+ dozen decoys that I use at various times during the season.

2 dozen herters black ducks
1 dozen herters mallards
1 dozen herters white wing scoter
3 dozen herters eider
3 herters goldeneye
3 herters bufflehead
2 herters millenium bluebill decoys

9 carrylite oldsquaw
4 carrylite green wing teal
4 carrylite wood ducks
4 carrylite goldeneyes
15 carrylite canada goose floaters
1 dozen knight & Hale mallards

3 cedar black ducks (currently rough carved work in progress)
1 L.L. Bean Supermagnum coastal gunner Black duck

I am still in the process of finishing up some eider and black ducks for the upcoming season. I have burlapped and painted quite a few of the deeks listed above. I like my herters decoys the best.

I do a lot of hiking into public land myself...on my back i carry:

1 dzn GHG lifesize Mallards (water keel)
1 dzn GHG hotbuy Mallards
1 dzn GHG Widgeon (weighted keel...ouch ouch)
6 Flambeau Mallards (water keel)

i am looking to add 6 GW Teal to the spread..i like diversity.

I go with the GHG's because they are inexpensive and very realistic looking. I do have some issues with paint rubbing off, but only because i treat them pretty rough. this will be my 3rd season for some of those dekes and 2nd season for others. they still look good enough to hunt over. (i get about 40 days a season in with them)

At the rate those GHG last, I would need to buy 3 dozen to give me one dozen good ones at the end of the season.

Trying to remember off the top of my head...

6 dozen GHG hotbuys
1 1/2 dozen G&H standard swivel heads
5 G&H Supermag swivelheads
3 dozen flambeau magnums
4 sleepers
4 feeder butts
1 dozen goose floaters

Not all of them go out all the time. I usually hike to my spots on public land as well.

EXACTLY, that is what it is all about. Some people care more about what the decoys look like than the ducks care.

puddlejumper - hmmm, yes. i guess my post could have been taken as being directed towards other people. actually, it was more ment to be directed at myself as to the care i give my dekes in relation to what is probably required.

I know, I came across confusing, I'm just saying some people are more picky than ducks. Does anyone know when the new GHG decoys are coming out?

From what I've read, they should be arriving at the dealers sometime this month.

For sea ducks i currently use Quack Jumbo Eiders 6 dozen which I repaint and then attach an E Allen Drake Eider Head.. I also use E Allen Scoters 2 dozen.

For puddle Ducks I use Quacks. About 4 Dozen mixed blacks, Mallards ,Teal.

I find Quacks to be fantastic durable and very tough.

8 doz. G&H mallards anywhere from magnum to super mag
3 doz. Carry-Lite mallards as a cheap filler ($15 a doz. )
1/2 doz. G&H bluebills
1/2 doz. GHG bluebills
1 doz. GHG pintails
1/2 doz. Flambeau pintails
1/2 doz. GHG widgeon
1/2 doz. G&H canada geese

Ronnie, what you have 8 doz. greenwingers for? That's a whole lotta little green missile decoys! :tounge:
