If you be hunting blacktail or mule deer go with the 270. Even that is a little big, but it has the range. 30-06 although popular is really too much gun. The 308 with light bullets is a good .30 choice. Ammo is a little cheaper than the others.

I like the Remington Model 7 in 308. Very light. You can carry it all day long.

I use a .223 for Texas Whitetails. They look like big German shepards. Like the Californai blacktail. I have never used anything bigger than the 6mm, (.243) And I have killed Axis, whitetail, sheep, hogs, antelope, elk, and red deer - (european elk)

Good Luck!

I would check your local pawn shops. There can be some real sleepers for first rifles.

Savage sells kits. I would go with the 270 if I were you its a more accurate rifle at long ranges than a 30-06

Prolly the wrong forum to be discussing this....but my thoughts on the 300 win mag is too much rifle as a first rifle....how old are you? The 270 was a great first rifle for me. I now shoot my 300 RUM and it is a BIG step up.

Im 21 6' 220 so i'm not worried about it being"too much gun" necessarily. and i ask on here because the rifle/handgun forum doesnt get much response and i already had a thread started here on the subject.

Viper, I suggest you start another thread looking for a gun. I would just move this one to another forum, but you already have one going there. Remember guys that no commentary is allowed in the classified forums. If you want to make a suggestion to him, please do so in the other thread or by pm.
