Alabama Gill netting bill coming up

Postby David » Thu Apr 24, 2008 12:28 pm

Dear Fellow Fishermen, Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Our CCA members met in Montgomery yesterday before the House Committee that held a public hearing on HB 566 that will ban the commercial use of gill nets in Alabama. We are proud to report that because of your hard work, we were successful in getting the bill moved out of committee with favorable passage. Special thanks go to Edwin Lamberth, Manning McPhillips and Captain Dan Kolenich who testified in front of the House Agriculture and Forestry Committee.

Over the next week, it's going to be critical that you contact your state representative and ask that they vote in support of HB 566. You can find the name and a link to your representative's contact information here. The gill net ban will ensure that we protect Alabama's marine resources for our economy and for future generations. We expect the net ban to come before the full House as soon as next week, so please call your representative today.

CCA members presented strong scientific evidence yesterday that supports the ban of gill nets and the effect they have on our state's fish population. Economic impact information, scientific studies, media reports, letters from scientists and other information was shown to the committee. If you would like to see the materials presented in yesterday's House meeting, please click here.

The public hearing put us in a great position to move this important bill once it reaches the House floor, but we will only be successful by flooding our representatives with calls. Please let us know the responses you are receiving from your calls so that we can determine which areas we need to focus more of our efforts.

Sincerely,

Coastal Conservation Association of Alabama

Dear Fellow Fishermen, Thursday, May 1st, 2008

We are proud to report that our bill to ban gill nets passed the full Senate unanimously today because of the actions by Senator Tripp Pittman and the leadership of Senator Pat Lindsey. The bill is now going to the House and will possibly be in a position to pass next week. This is proof that hard work and communicating with these representatives pays off.

It’s critical over the weekend that you call your House member and urge them to support SB 385 so that we can seize this opportunity to finally protect our marine resources. You can find the name and a link to your representative's contact information here. We expect the net ban to come before the full House as soon as next week, so please call your representative as soon as possible.

Please continue contacting your House member to let them know how critical the gill net ban is to the coast of Alabama’s economy and to protecting one of our greatest pastimes.
