I hurt my left arm pretty bad this fall and have only made it out once with otterbfishing. Great day to hang out and talk with a good friend.
The majority of the birds have moved on from Cook Inlet. We had some clear cold nights with a full moon and they left for points south. From the reports over on the AOD it was an overnight change out on the Hay Flats - day they did well, then the next there was nothing.
Yesterday, Monday, and today Tuesday had some geese leaving and it appears some brant left, I saw them heading southeast on a good low, surface winds in excess of 50 knots here in Cold Bay. Still lots of birds, limit of ducks yesterday and geese today. Has not gotten cold yet, have yet to even use the liner of my hunting parka, just a medium wool shirt. No snow, usually have two or three snows by now. The poor ptarmigan are sticking out like sore thumbs. Seems to be a strange fall, hope we don't have a killer winter, but only time will tell.
Dadgum, sounds like all the reports are true then. My buddy is still up there and we talk about everyday and he's tell me there's no ducks anywhere. And i'm like no way its wayyy to early for them to be heading out. Which sucks because before I left we found a killer late season spot which some local ducks will use once everything freezes up but won't be near the birds as normal.
Ray~get well buddy and tell Jesse I said Hi when ya'll meet again!
LaRedneck, a question, are you a ******* from Louisiana, or lower Alambama, as in North West Florida, which is where I mostly call home?
Somewhat confused on your response about no birds, we still have most of ours, on the peninsula. I would imagine that there is a big difference from area to area, when you consider the size of this state.
I'm from Lousiana man, spent six years hunting in Ak while in the military...like how I put that, lol. Anyhow I was just trying to get some info on the birds for my buddy thats still there. After my own investigation seems as its not been cold enough to push any birds down yet so I think he's panicing since he's not seeing any.
LaRedneck, is your buddy in the interior, Fairbanks area, or around ANC? Been getting chilly in the interior, low teens the last few days I have checked. When I lived there, in the mid 80's most of the local water was hard by late September. I hated Alaska at that point, moving to Cold Bay saved that for me.
Yea he's in ANC, we've done enough scouting to know what stays open throughout the year and keep an eye on the weather up north and what not but its just been a crappy year. We've got one spot that stays open for quite a while but no birds in it.
