Kodiak Island deer herd #'s

Postby phutch30 » Mon Jun 11, 2007 8:30 am

I am heading up to Kodiak this Nov for a duck/deer combo. I heard that there was a pretty bad die off in the Islands deer herd. Can anyone confirm this. Was it Island wide or restricted to inland areas or north or south portions of the island. Any info would help.

Thanks

I didn't pay attention to Kodiak's weather this winter. If it was an above normal snow year then I'm sure the winter kill was higher than usual. Those darn deer are like rats down there. Every time we go down for a bear hunt they are everywhere. They sure know just when to explode out of the alders  . Also, you can tell when there is a bear close by by watching their behavior. Call up the ADF&G office in Kodiak and talk to one of the bio's about the winter kill. They are always very helpful when we are planning a bear hunt.
