Northern Bird Migration

Postby Beluga » Wed Oct 12, 2005 10:26 am

I'm on the peninsula and I was wondering if anyone up north knows if the norther birds are moving yet. Are the lakes starting to freeze? I hunted last week and it looked like the local residents have left and the northern birds haven't shown, leaving not much around for now.

Weather Report

I drove to Delta Junction from Anchorage this past weekend. The small ponds and lakes are starting to freeze. The bigger lakes are still open of course. I saw more swans than ducks or geese. I saw about 20 cranes in Delta and one small flock of ducks on wing. Delta got a little snow Sunday night. Monday it never got above freezing.

Thanks for the reply. Think I am going to try the head of Kachemak bay this weekend out of Homer, hopefully the timing will be right. My dad said the mallards are starting to pile up behind the Homer spit so maybe it's started.
