How is the season going thus far?

Postby snappereater » Fri Nov 13, 2009 1:36 pm

How has the 2009-2010 season been for you?

Slow for me with only a couple ducks each day out, 4 days thus far. Hunting local lakes. Seeing Gads and few Red Heads.

I am a newbie to duck hunting and this site , just started last year.

Hunted up on the rim (Show Low area) this weekend and saw quite a few ducks. Shot 2 teals and 2 red's and had 3 birds that we could not recover. Seemed to be a lot of green wing teals, reds, and a few mallards and pintails with a bunch of the little puddle ducks mixed in. It was very windy and rained most of the time so most of the birds seemed to be flying late in the morning.

Going back up this weekend and may check Unit 1 and see if we can shoot some geese. I will try and report back next week.

Staring to see many more birds. With this cold snap around Salt Lake, UT we should be getting birds. Full moon is in the 1st part of December. Things should be getting ready to take off here real soon. I bet duck and goose hunting is red hot in the upcoming weeks.

I agree! I talked to a bunch of guys in Idaho I kow and the last few weeks they said they have had crappy weather and it is getting really cold. I am heading out again this weekend and will try and report back.

we did alright, shot ten birds between 3 of us. saw a bunch of shovelers, a few reds, 3 barrows goldeneyes, and 3 buffleheads. all the birds worked right into the dekes and made for some pretty easy shots but unfortunately 2 escaped. how did everyone else do?

Me and my dad went scouting for elk this morning/duck hunting and I got a mallard drake, bufflehead drake, and a gadwall drake. i hit another bufflehead that was just too far for the dog to retrieve out of the lake and the wind was no help at all.

Hunted 2.5 days in Show Low this weekend. We set up dekes on one location and worked through a couple little marsh areas down the road jump shooting. We ended up with about 5 buffles, 2 red heads, 2 ruddy's, and 1 teal and 1 mallard. This was with 3 guys so it was pretty tough. Saturday a lot of birds were flying but most were not interested in stopping and were flying at 30,000 feet.

Checked out Carnero, and Geneva (almost dry) lakes yesterday and not many ducks so i will check out a couple of other lakes in unit 1 as well.

It is still quite warm in Show Low and the weather looks like it has been pretty calm in the northern states so I think things are going to be a bit slow until the get a good snow storm.

Hunted Cibola sportsman club last weekend shot 7 honkers, 1 ross, 5 mallards 1 teal
There is about 700 honkers and 300 snows on the refuge as of last weekend.
I was really surprised we did that well for 2 shooters this early.

I wish I could got towards Cibola, what a great place!

Checked all of the following yesterday, covered about 150 miles.

Crescent - half frozen (7 degrees when I got there around 5:30 AM)
Mexican Hay Lake - frozen
White Mtn - very low, mostly frozen
Sunrise - Of course a ton of ducks but it is on the reservation
Carnero - Mostly frozen
Big Lake - Had 2 teals come in to the decoys first thing and then nothing for 2 hours. A lot of ducks but they all hung out in the middle and were not interested in flying.

No geese on any of these.

No ducks but I called in a coyote in the middle of the day so it was not a complete loss!

I have been out the past few weekends and this weekend was much better. More ducks are flying and more are getting into my steel. Seen about 15 or so geese flying around. I have been getting a mixed bag of gads, shovlers, widgeon. 26 ducks since the season opened with majority over the past several weeks.

Good luck and be safe.

Been out twice. Prior to the weather changing and the hunting getting good. 1 Mallard. Wife is a little pissy with x-mas and all, my hunting trips are slim and none for the rest of the year. I know there are a couple of you reading this and shaking your head feeling a little better cause your not alone on the S LIST. FYI got a perfect 16ft alum seanymph boat for sale for anyone interested. You can check out other details on the boat catagorie.
