Oldsquaw in Arizona???

Postby jrgraha3 » Mon Jan 30, 2012 11:45 am

Long time reader,first time posting..

Saturday limited out and after picking up the decoys to my absolute amazement an oldsquaw flew by me 20ft. Anyone ever heard of one being this far inland? He had to be way off course? After seeing him taunt me like that I had to go back out Sunday. Sure enough later in the day Sunday he came by again and I was able to bag him! I'm still shocked, I feel like I shot bigfoot in Arizona, as Ive never imagine I'd see an oldsquaw unless I went on a guided hunt in Alaska.. So has anyone heard of them being this far south/inland? Still shocked and stoked about it!

That's crazy. I've never heard of one being that far inland or that far south. I saw one a few years back flying across the water in North Mississippi after season and it was a bit shocking. I guess there's no fences in the sky

They are seen on the Great Lakes and occasionally on the Great Salt Lake, all pretty far inland, but I've never heard of them being as far south as Arizona. Congratulations on a great rare trophy!

A rarity for sure

An oldsquaw hen was shot around 20 miles north of me a few years ago here in OK.

Guys shoot them in Spokane, WA all the time. Granted, thats not as far inland as AZ but over the mountains and in the desert none the less.

I conducted waterfowl hunter surveys this past season in NE Colorado and had a hunter shoot a hen. It was really shocking for me to see her.
