Shade is right repaints are the way to go, but if you want to try and create your own under the decoy forum there is a pretty solid foam carving step by step.

Great post! This guy in the thread has a great thing going that actually works. Follow his thread because it looks very promising. I've repainted some cans that look just as good as the GHG. I've also done redheads and buffleheads. If you need the colors, there are a lot of members on here that will give you an exact match for when you paint. We had a big group of cans this year fly through where we hunt for a month. I bagged a pair fatties and they're in getting mounted. I hope you do the same. They are a great duck!

That thread I put il there has a few color matches if I remember correctly. But to be 100% honest with you, the most important thing to bagging a Canvasback is to find them. If you have found a good location and have seen them, 90% of your battle is done. In my limited experience and from talking to the 'experts', as long as you have Black and White decoys you will have a chance at shooting Cans. They may not "land" in your spread, but they like to fly by and check out other divers. You could get some pass shooting opportunities, but make sure you got a good dog or a good way to chase down a cripple. Diving Ducks are tough and if you knock em down, they won't give up like a Pintail will. He'll start swimming away faster than you think possible. Most guys agree that if their head is up when they hit the water...... put another shell in him quick. And know your local and federal regs for Cans. Most states have a limit of one Can per day. Good luck to you and your dad. I hope you both get one this season. Fully plumed, they are one of the prettiest IMO. I have one that the Taxi just finished for me. Can't wait to pick him up.
