Ideas for body boody hide?

Postby blackened89 » Fri Oct 12, 2012 12:40 pm

I've found some shallow lakes/big marshes that I plan to try out body booting for my first time. These are all walk in locations so I am not able to hunt out of a boat. I'll be setting up for divers mostly bluebills redheads and cans. My question is- what's the best way to hide. I know people use a silhouette geese to stand behind. I've thought of putting a few jumbo goose shells on stakes and standing in the middle of them off to the side of the spread. Another idea I have is to try a ghillie suit and stand either in the middle of the spread or off to the side. Or maybe, just regular camo standing still in the water would be all it takes to get the birds in? I know divers aren't the smartest birds but I feel like I'd need to hide pretty well. My decoy spread will be between 2-4 dozen oversize bluebills, cans, and redheads depending how far I'll be walking. This is my first time hunting open water like this, normally I hunt from shore or in vegetation but in the state I am hunting now I'm no longer restricted to vegetation. Any tips or ideas would be helpful.

If you have one of those huge mesh decoy bags..... You could spray it with dark grey primer... And then stick a couple poles in the mud and slip the decoy bag upside down over the poles so that the bag is stretched between them....? It might work. Lots of diver guys say "just hold still, but I think a Cammo pattern in the middle of open water is "suspicious" to any ducks. Let us know what you end up doing and whether it worked or not.

Thanks shade I was kind of thinking the same thing, only with burlap. I went out this afternoon til sunset and stood out in the middle of a roughly 40 acre marsh. I didn't have my decoys with me so I was just out there to try n pass shoot. There were a lot of divers on the lake along with puddlers, swans and tons of coots. The water was half way up my chest. I was wearing full camo with a camo facemask. I was was holding my gun over my shoulder, and it is a dull matte finish and oiled wood with no glare. There were small flocks of birds flying around pretty steady the entire afternoon. Almost every goup and single that was flying in my direction would get about 75 yards away, and then veer off to the side. I'm pretty sure they knew something was up. Only two divers flew close enough for me to shoot and the were both hens. One flock of teal buzzed me and I was able to knock one bird down. Maybe the birds would have kept coming to me if I had some decoys out. I know my gun could have been giving me away but I feel that the birds would've picked me out no problem even if my gun was camo. I think I'll try the burlap/decoy bag idea first. Another idea that i thought of was to have a couple swan decoys and wear a white jacket over my waders. There were easily 50 swans on this pond so the birds should be used to them. I'll let you know how my next attempt goes, and if anyone has any other tips, I'm all ears.

Thanks

Oh yeah and I meant to say body booting, not body boody....... :fingerhead:

If it were me I would use some vegetation or if there is any about some wood laying around on the bank. Maybe take some 1x1's tall enough that a couple feet are sticking out of the water and rig something up to attach some wood or brush to them. There has got to be some sort of brush or timber in the area and even out in the middle from time to time some has to float around. Personally, body booting doesn't sound like fun.....I would build a makeshift blind or carry in some burlap and build a blind on a point or in a shallow area.

Why don't you make silos out of swans then? Few swan decoys and your silo or two would help bring attention to your spread.

Also, you can make a gun rack shelf on the back silo to keep that hidden also.
