We did our first layout hunt the other day with no success but it was kinda of a scouting trip more than anything. Next day we set up in a diffrent spot and had buffs all over us. We ended up shooting a 3 man limit in just under 3 hours. We only had 1 layout boat so we had to take turns. My second boat is almost ready to be fiberglassed so we can run 2 boats. Got a first timer on his first layout hunt. We may have converted a hard core mallard hunter:). We had 2 dozen buff decoys set to one side of us and 2 dozen can\bluebill mix on the other side. We never decoyed anything else, but I'll shoot buffle head all day long. Great way to start of the diver season. This is as early as we had ever done a layout hunt. Most of our ducks start showing up around the 10th of November.
Life is to short to sweat the small stuff. Do what you love and do it often.
