Duck ID help

Postby Brent » Tue Oct 10, 2006 5:50 pm

On Sunday I jumped 12 birds on a small pond just out of shooting range.

They had black heads and brilliant white bellies. I'm color blind so its possible the heads could be a darker shade of a color like red, but I'm pretty sure they were black.

They appeared to be about the size of a wood duck and one was screwing around partially under water just before they flushed.

Any thoughts?

Dark heads and white bellies WOW that narrows it down. :toofunny: If I had to guess I would propably go with ringnecks, cans, or scaup.
If they're dumb enough to be lured in by plastic you're really just doing them a favor.

Know your target before you pull the trigger.

Duck Hunting is ALL about the bag.

Where your located would help, but on a small pond I would guess they are mergansers. Possibly have a pointed bill?

I guess I did set myself up to sound quite a bit less intelligent than I meant to.

Clearly after using the link they were ring necks.
