scaup?

Okay what exactly is a scaup. im a puddler hunter but have always wandered what they are and how you hunt them? i have seen these small black and white ducks on the creeks where i hunt that dive down and fly realy low and fast but never know what they are so dont shoot.

Almost all black in early season with a spooned bill. Actually quite tasty if you get them up north before they start eating fish.

Greater Scaup

Blue bills, black heads. Some call em jacks even tho up here in the north a jack is a ringer.

You won't see very many bufflehead on creeks or in the woods.


Chances are he is seeing hooded mergansers.

yep they were buffies. so a scaup is just another name for a blue bill?
