I dont know.. bill doesnt look like a ruddy to me. Ruddy bills curve upwards at the tip, that one appears to go straight. Also the nostrils look way too far forward for a ruddy.

The feet appear to have orange? Ruddy feet are black/green.

Also the size, unless you have tiny hands the bird looks to be pretty big! Ruddy's are only the size of a teal.

To me, it looks like a young hen black scoter.
Why do I shoot 3.5" for geese? Because they don't make a 4" yet!

The feet had a little more red in them when she was shot. It was way bigger than a teal. I was really thinking a scoter because of the bill. The great thing is that it was shot on a pond in northeastern Oklahoma!

DD-
Look at how far forward the nostrils are on the dead bird vs..the pic you posted...also..look at the bottom of the bill, the "top lip"..see how it is, it fits inside the upper? That's to help them eat...

Ya know this is the second post I see on here where hunters are asking another to i.d. a dead duck. May I ask if you don't know what it is before you pull the trigger how do you know its okay to shoot ? Just asking !

My guess would be that it looks like a duck, flys like a duck, in the area where ducks frequent, it's 95% chance that it will be a duck. Yeah there are other species of birds around, but they usually have something different about them such as long pointed beaks, gray and white and eating out of garbage cans, pure black going "caw caw" as a call, or other things that indicate that it is not a duck.

I normally agree with this, but when a scoter comes diving in the decoys in the middle of Oklahoma(I'm assuming that's where it was shot) it could look like anything to someone who has never shot one or seen on in real life. I know if I didn't hunt sea ducks on a regular basis then I would've done the same thing. Although I believe I could figure out what it was immediately after picking it up.
