Hen goldeneyes have a yellow tip on their bill. Not a hen goldeneye

A lot of the hen whistlers I shoot don't have the yellow bill tip, I'm not sure if it is an age thing or what but that is a goldeneye

I would say GE but, with a solid black bill and no better picture, I would not rule out immature drake GE. Many people mistake immature drakes for hens. Usually, but not always, you will be able to notice at least a white line near the side of the bill, or white flecks, if immature drake. Unlike other duck species, the GE drake can take as long as 5 years to show it's full color. Until it does that, it will look like a hen, more so than a drake.

The immature drakes are usually large compared to the hens.

def a hen golden eye. I can tell because of the bill has kind of a leather type covering which goldeneyes do. It also has a certain look to the head and short bill which only goldeneyes have.

Bingo. Like some other duck species, drake GE's do not possess their adult colors the first year. Squaw, buffies, GE's, etc...

All these are good answers but I'm gonna step out on a limb and say that drake buffle heads are the same with growing there colors like that also. I've heard from other hunters that when a drake buffle head starts out it looks like a hen with the small white mark behind it's eye and as it grows older that spot gets bigger as it matures eventually making the full white hood. Not saying I'm %100 correct cuz I very well cannot be but going from what I've heard before I would say immature drake buffle head. The bill is what makes me think that.

I don't even understand where anyone can get Bufflehead out of that picture... 100% Goldeneye.

Well I stand corrected I see. But if you would take the time and read what I said you would understand where I got that from. Don't see many golden eyes around my parts so I wouldn know much about them at all but we so shoot alot of buffle heads and I do know that immature drakes start out looking like that as well. Also I'm not much into to divers. Stick with the puddlers round my parts. Pintails also develop there stripe and sprig as they mature also so I would have to say I don't know why anyone would say a goldeneye is the only duck that does that.

Also judging by this fellas finger in this picture that head looks fairly small also making me rule out golden eye but hey like I said what would I know. I was going by assumption anyways.

Based on this pic, it's tough to say....a GE would have an unmistakeable GOLDEN EYE...this one doesn't seem to have that...need a better pic....
