Duck ID??

Postby wvugunner92 » Wed Jan 15, 2014 5:54 pm

A buddy of mine shot this duck today in west va. A pair came in and both looked identical he said. though I wasnt on the hunt I did see the duck in his truck and was amazed at the huge size. I consider myself pretty good with ids but I'm stumped with this one. I'm only assuming it's a sea duck because of its size but I can't find anything that looks like it. Any help?

Its definitely a Scoter. I could be wrong but it looks like a White-Winged Scoter.

Scoter, white wing if I'm not mistaken.

White wing.

Commons and Surfs don't have any white on their wings.

The last one is a sponnie. The first one is hard to tell but the slop of the head and feet make it look like a can. I could be wrong on the can though.
