Season to date

Postby jc_182002 » Wed Dec 07, 2011 10:34 am

Wondering how everyones season is going so far? Our three man group is holding at 119 with one band. All the ducks down here in LA "lower arkansas" are all grouped up due to lack of water. Makes for some easy killing instead of hunting!

We killed 199 the first split. No bands. Don't want to talk about the species. Suffice it to say that 99 of 'em had extraordinarily large smiles on their faces when they died.

Out of approximately 700 birds we killed last season, exactly 59 of 'em were shovelers. This season, if it weren't for spooner luck we'd have had no luck at all . . . gloom, despair, and agony on me.

Grey ducks, teal, and the dreaded shoveler. Hasn't been what you'd call a "Kodak" season thus far. All this water ain't gonna help us, either.

You guys in AR kill some monster number of ducks!!! I've gotten 27 in 6 days of hunting this season, and will be extremely happy if I can break 100 this year. Wow! You guys must kill 1000 birds a season!

Never have, actually. Always wanted to, but the number always alludes my group. Always seems like we're right on track and then we have a big flood followed by a freeze or no water and a month long freeze or something. We typically average between 500-600. Last year was a very good year . . . possibly the best I've seen for mallards.

Well, you guys are blessed with some great numbers. I hunted 29 days last year and got 64 ducks by myself (almost all divers ... mostly canvasbacks, ringnecks and bluebills). This year's split has been much better and I'm sure I'll get over 100. Will be in AR for a week next week at the meto. Hope to bump a duck or two. Congrats on the numbers, that's pretty awesome. How big is your group? How many days did you hunt?

Usually averages 4-5 people. Sometimes as few as just me, others as many as 9. Just depends on the availability of birds and timing as far as folks and their work schedules, and of course, how many folks a given blind will hold. We hunted 8 of the 9 days that season was open. There were 9 of us altogether for the opener. Like I said, I don't want to talk about the species . . .

A duck is a duck no matter what. That's pretty cool! If you are ever in the dire need another person in your group, I'll gladly make the drive to NEA and fill your group

Ive never hit the magical 1,000 mark yet, keep in mind we have little to no standing water this year even after this last big rain. All the birds are grouped up right now and im sure by Christmas they will be gone and the dreaded days of killing 3-8 ducks per hunt will be back on us, if that many!

Nice pile of birds! It must be nice to not have to race to a hole every day.

Well, these were all taken in Florida, but since nobody's sharing pictures, I'll put up my modest Florida bags.
6 days hunting, 27 ducks ( 22 of my own)
20+ days bowhunting, 2 deer

I hunt public land so like I said we had to race for a hole but we had a good hunt. going back in the morning and will be on the line at 4 am. again but should kill some more birds on the lakes. Mallards just aren't using the woods here yet!

I've got a friend out there right now and they've shot 4 birds in 3 days of hunting. Said they saw a good many today but they wouldn't work. Anyone having the same problem? Also, I'm headed out for 5 days over the mlk weekend, what are yall's thoughts on how it's going to be by then? Or I guess I should say, what is your honest Arky opinion on the duck forecast for the next few weeks? :lol3:

I think based on what I have seen more ducks are slipping in. I have never seen a flock like this morning granted they were Teal but we got to go m-16 on em. Worked a few mallards but most didn't want anything to do with it.

Two of us killed 8 mallards and 3 teal this morning but not a lot of birds really flying. My forecast is that the birds will continue to slowly move down cause thats what we care seeing. We have been on the X on almost all our hunts this year. It's like real estate location, location, location!!!

Well, we appear to have bottomed out. We're hunting within 200 yards of a reservoir that's holding a good 10,000 birds, and they're waiting until after the moon rises at night to feed. Thursday was good, and we took a 5 man limit by 9:00. Friday & Saturday, on the other hand, really, really sucked. Birds glued down on the roost and didn't move a feather until after dark. We're probably done until we get off our lazy butts and head for the woods or the weather pattern shifts.

Our hole was pretty lame today. Lots of ducks either flying high or not interested at all in our spread. Time to search for a back up.

Killed another 8 mallard limit today by 8 am. and really didn't call much they have been just dropping in. Could have killed 2 or 3 more limits easy today. :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:
