Corn, Corn, and more Corn!!!

Looks like the corn fad is quickly replacing a lot of Arkansas rice fields. Driving across the delta yesterday I saw field after field of corn growing and being planted, I'm just wondering what the pros and cons of all this corn in AR will be this season.

Pros- More money for farmers who have been srewed by rice prices. Ducks eat corn too - just wonder about water

I definitely like the idea of farmers making more, I was just curious if they would still be flooding fields after harvest.

Now I don't know this for a fact but...I suspect the corn-fields replacing rice fields has to do with two things.

1. corn has a better profit margin. (wait til they get the chemical bill)
2. The water table has fell significantly over the last ten years. It's just getting harder to pump the water from deeper and deeper.

I'd like to know more about this. I heard that the water table was once 10-20 below the ground and now it several hundred feet and as much as 6-700 feet down. Anybody else know some facts? I'm just repeating what I heard somewhere else on the forum.

Thanks for any info we can share.

The price of fertilzer is the reason for the corn. Corn will also take a good bit of water.

Corn competes very well with our rice. It offers us a little advantage for diversifying in terms of marketability and the timing of planting and harvest. I'd assume that those who held water before will continue to do so. Corn presents similar residue problems to rice. The water table has nothing to do with us growing corn.
