Now I don't know this for a fact but...I suspect the corn-fields replacing rice fields has to do with two things.
1. corn has a better profit margin. (wait til they get the chemical bill)
2. The water table has fell significantly over the last ten years. It's just getting harder to pump the water from deeper and deeper.
I'd like to know more about this. I heard that the water table was once 10-20 below the ground and now it several hundred feet and as much as 6-700 feet down. Anybody else know some facts? I'm just repeating what I heard somewhere else on the forum.
