White River?

Postby BenelliBoy75 » Sat Nov 17, 2012 5:55 pm

I'm trying to plan a trip to the White River, around St. Charles. I would like some tips on the area; no gps co-ordinances or anything like that. I've never been on it and I'm just wondering if there's anything I should watch out for. I'm going to scout it for a day or so before we hunt, but I would like some type of starting point, if ya know what I mean. Is the St. Charles area even a good location or should I go north or south of there, and how crowded does it get? I've hunted fields in that area a good many times, but never on the river. I usually hunt Felsenthal and will be going there, as well this year, but wanting to try something new. What is it like compared to Felsenthal and what should I expect? Any tips and info will be much appreciated.

Ah St. Charles. A historically significant town. Wish I could help more, But I've always came in from South side of the NWR during high water periods.

I don't think you will have to worry about long strings this year.

They're telling the truth

This area of the river starts to flood around 30' or so. That will tell you how low it is.
If you plan on hunting the channel, I'd stay home.

I have trouble skiing on the white river when it's this low. I bet there's places you could walk across it.

The river may be low but the oxbow lakes are doing quite well. And you think it's so low you could walk across, maybe in northwest Arkansas at twin bridges but not here in the southeast part of the state.

I know my ski boat hits trees in the main channel at I-40 where the river is now.

Well it's 9.2 at Claredon if you feel the need to ski and with it back to near 70 this weekend you could probably leave your waders at the house!

I don't know how I would feel about skiing that river south of des arc I have seen some big logs going down river several times. That would make it a little too exciting for me.

you are not good unless you can dodge sticks while skiing barefooted at 40 mph.

I'm not, the young bucks boat as far as they can and walk in. I would prefer to boat into the crookeds, not hike.

There is not much water on any public land right now, if you do find water in the lakes on white river you are gonna be elbow to elbow someone, as for bayo meto it is not flooded either. If you have water right now you have ducks. Overall it has been a very good season so far, lots of mallards

You are correct sir, very little 'public' water and from what we are seeing the early birds to arrive are getting pretty smart. I am hoping for rain and a cold push (new ducks) ----- dream big I guess!

it is low now, but when it is up it can be dangerous if you don't know the river. Two men drowned three years ago when it was up and running. Took water over the bow and sank the boat.
