Curl feathers

Postby jc_182002 » Mon Jan 14, 2013 3:09 pm

ok guys got one that has stumped me. any of you ever shot greenheads that have no curl feathers or pintail drake with no sprigs? we have killed them before and always passed them off as young birds. this year we have killed 5 greenheads and one pintail with nothing back there. Has sparked my interest and don't know what is causing this? The birds seem mature from looking at them.

80% of the early season sprigs we killed had no pin. As for the curl feathers on the mallards, I honestly never paid any attention. The pin's we're shooting lately have had long tails. I think it's just about the time of the season.

Cannon is right. It's all about the time of year. You should see how the pintails look on their way down in September. Their return in January brings a whole different bird.
