Geez, bro. That sucks. He was a gentleman ('cept when being fed from the table). There are about 30 of us DHC'ers that can legitimately say we'll miss that guy.

this part made me laugh. He stole some summer sausage out of my hand At the DHC hunt earlier this month.

Ha. You had to feed him like a horse. Fingers fully extended with food in palm. Otherwise the outcome might not be good. I may go into hiding for the last weekend next year.

Arrrgh! I wish it had been excellent. This was as bad a season as I've seen on the farm in decades. It's always good to look back across the season and note that nobody lost a finger or blew their head off, but insofar as the hunting goes, it was pathetic. Makes me appreciate the good ones a little more, though.

Looks like you guys had a decent run over at the Lounge, though.

You're right!! As long as everyone made it out alive and in one piece I consider that a successful season!!! Some seasons are just better killing seasons than others but it usually tends to even out over time...

Final tally:

1808 ducks, 694 mallards
488 geese, 248 specks
6 bands

It was a struggle. I wish I could say I was sad to see it end, but the reality is that I was begging for mercy and crying uncle by the time it was over.

Here's to a better run next go-round.

Well I plan on continuing without a gun.. Going to sit in the blinds, watch where to put the decoys. Watch what they're doing naturally, without any influence other than the corn I'm gonna pour out for them. Do any blind repairs, improvements needed, get ready for next season, then stay the heck out of there so I'm not fighting snakes this time - lol

Got my vacations and all scheduled - I work one week out of the last 10 in 2014. Gonna get after em!

Cannon, what was ya'lls totals for the yr? From the looks of it, Pat and those boys over at the "lounge" pulled in alot of your birds. We ended up pushing 400+/-. Not sure of the final tally. But the last weekend sure helped. Too bad every weekend can't be like that. Or aleast half like it anyways.

We never made 500. Ended at 496. Unfortunately, I didn't see 30 days in the blind this season. First time I can remember that little hunting. When I was younger, I would have chased em on running water. At this point, I sit at the compound and whine.

Nah. We didn't have any less birds than normal. We had less water than normal. When the roosts freeze, the birds we hunt leave. When they thaw, birds come back. We just had less thawed days than we did frozen.

Well, I dove into the youth season this year with the singular goal of finding a bird for my youngest. And I did. Took 2 hunts and a box & a half of shells, but she finally picked off her first bird on the wing.

It was a successful day, and there were a decent number of those spread over the last 3 months. It was an extraordinarily messed up season, no matter how you cut it. That said, to the extent I've sounded like a whine bag over the tough hunting this season, it wasn't intended that way. I'm just pretty transparent about our hunting, and the more time you spend down here, the more you're gonna realize that most people aren't. With rare exceptions (and I can think of exactly one such exception), if I post a picture of birds, those birds were harvested in the blind I was personally hunting. Unless someone is leasing a blind for the day, which I RARELY do, we hunt one blind per day, not several.

I enjoy seeing three-day combined piles of birds stacked up that came from 5 blinds. I love pics of dead animals. On the other hand, I don't have a financial stake in making things look better than they are up here, and if I say "we," I mean I was there for it. If I say they, I'm talking about birds someone took in a blind somewhere else. My "club" is equal to the blind I'm hunting on the farm on a particular day. If I have the privilege of hunting with my friend Cason down south, or on the rare occasion that I venture onto public land, those numbers don't go towards that talley. That being said, our season was pretty terrible, but, in perspective, I averaged 4 total hunters in the blind per average day, got skunked twice, and averaged about 15 birds per day of hunting spread across those 4 hunter averages. Problem was, "we" just didn't hunt as much as usual.

I love hunting for the sake of hunting, but I measure success or failure by the number of birds harvested on hunts where I was physically present. I just didn't catch near as many of those hunts this season as I'm used to. I'm typically there to see between 650 and 900 birds die out of the blind I'm hunting on my farm alongside that same average group of 4 hunters. This season, it was exactly 498, which is pretty bad, in my estimation, but legitimate, nonetheless. Thing is, the number of birds harvested per hunt was about where it always is. Number of days in the blind, however, was about 40% less than normal.
