Well saturday was a big sucsess for my son and I.

My son and I went to Sutter for his 1st duck hunt
and my 1st opener on a refuge and 1st time @ sutter
So lots of 1st for us on Saturday.
It started out great, First bird in was a Bull sprig cupped up right
over the blocks. I made my brother hold up and my son got the 1st shot of the morning. Rolling that big bull sprig right in front of us.
YA!! he's hooked now
It wasnt dead when it hit the water so we got to watch Samson chase him around for a while. another big +
except he pulled the pin tails out trying to get a hold of it. It seems
that dog always pulls those feathers out of crippled sprigs or pheasants.
Oh well wasnt really a mounter anyway so we ate him for lunch today :tounge:
To be honest the shooting was not as great as I expected. But
we had a couple of elderly gentlemen 70+ years (that had not been hunting in years) walk out with us. They setup "RIGHT" next to us and were shooting at any and everything. They were having such a good time I could'nt say anything to them although my brother wanted to.
one of them gave us his left over shells (3/4 of a box ) they shot a solid three hours an easy 75 rounds with one bird each to show for it.
We ended up with 9 birds only one was a mallard. my son got 2
the sprig and a hen woody.
But more imortant he had a GREAT time and wants to go again.

By the way he will be 10 in December

It sounds like you had a great time. That's awesome. Especially since your boy got to take some birds.
What did you think of Sutter, overall? It's quite a bit closer than than SAC nwr for me, which is where I usually hunt. There and Yolo, but last season Yolo left me a little sour. It's super close, but I'd rather drive and actually shoot ducks. I'm sure some guys do alright there, but I sure didn't last year. Anyway, I'll quit ranting about it. I was just wondering what your overall opinion about it is.

It's very nice refuge. more wood ducks on the place than I've seen at any other refuge. We went to a area Rel told me about. another guy I talked to out there told me we were in the mallard hole. I know we would have
pulled out more birds wthout help from our sky-busting friends.

Another little thing that did'nt help. My buddy came by Thurs night & picked up my boat and went out to my hole Sat am.
he call me at 9:00 am DONE "10 green heads"
we shoulda stayed home.
Oh Well

Glad ya got him started on the smartest bird in the flyway.

If he's anything like a lot of us were at that age he'll be "haunted" by the memory of that cupped and commited bull for the rest of his huntin' days!
