We can directly credit our duck hunting forefathers of the 1950's and times prior to the fact that the Grasslands exist today. ALL of the area was owned by the Miller and Lux Cattle company in the 1800's and the best marshes were divided and sold to duck hunters in the early half of the 1900's.

We can credit a fellow by the name of J Martin Wintun (deceased) of leading the charge for preservin the grasslands thru the 50's-60's and 70's. This guy had a lot of energy and heart for the marsh and the ducks. Without his lead, we'd have one third the marsh acreage there now.

Lastly....George Bush Sr....one of the last bills he signed in office in '92 was a guarenteed water supply for the marsh. Prior to that...things were iffy and it wasn't uncommon to be shooting over mudflats by January in some spots. Thanks to him, we now have water to hunt, brood ponds during the summer and the current times are good.....even if the actual hunting isn't what it used to be.
