Time to swich up the decoy game?

Postby Mattquack » Fri Dec 02, 2005 2:52 pm

Do you guys think it's time to cut back on the number decoys I use in my spread on the refuges? I've been using 1 1/2 to 3 dozen, and one spinner. I'm hunting yolo on sunday and thinking about just bringing half a dozen or so, and my spinner. What do you guys think? I'm obviously thinking that the ducks are going to be getting shy about the big groups of dekes.

I ususally don't lower the decoy count. what I do is to bunch them in small pods of 6 or so rather than to raft them up. This looks more like a refuge situation. the best way I know of to tell what you should do is to take a drive around the sancuary section of refuge (most have set aside and open it to public view), or drive around the rice lands. Look to see if the birds are rafting up or spreading out and do the same. Watch the weather too. when it storms, the birds tend to raft up (IMO). I'm in a club so I don't move all of our decoys on a daily basis. but we do spread them out in January

I tend to move around a lot, so I only carry a dozen or so with me. I have shot a few birds with only 6, but I imagine it would need to be the right spot at the right time.
I love all of God's creatures, properly prepared.
