They deserve to be worked. wrote:DUCKSPY! I responded earlier, now I'm sorry I did. Check out my handle, They Deserve To Be Worked! We are talking duck hunting on this site. Anyone who uses thousands of decoys or even can afford thousands of decoys has no right to use this website. you just want to kill ducks, not hunt them. Go to Clear Creek Pheasant Club in Corning and shoot Flighted Mallards every week! Just so you know, at our club, a new guy came in and set 2000 decoys. He was sent packing the next year. Hope it happens to you.

Personally, I think he just wants to POUNDEM! POUNDEM! POUNDEM! :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

I HAD HOPED THIS WEBSITE WAS LIKE A DUCK CLUB, YOU KNOW SITTING ON THE TAIL GATE , WADERS JUST OFF BEVERAGE OF CHOICE IN HAND, TALKING TO FELLOW MEMBERS WHILE LOOKING AT THE STRAPS OF BIRDS HANGING OFF GUN RACK OF YOUR BIKE,YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN WE ALL BEEN THERE DONE THAT....... By the way, if I can see your blind, so can the ducks, esp. if you don't cover your face.

Thats the largest you've seen? Ive never been flown over blinds. But i have been out to some blinds with 1000 and 800 decoys. It is possible you can't tell if they are decoys or real ducks?

Depends how low I'm willing to go. There was a club north of Sac. Refuge that kept a rather large spread of close to 800 give or take but I think they gave up. I bet those 1000 decoy blinds lasted a season or two and are back to the 350-400 numbers. Anyone who thinks they have 3000-4000 decoys out is nuts. I would buy that guy a 5th of malted scotch if he could prove to me he has a
single blind with a spread like that.

amen friedcoot...like i've said before, i'm in the air at least once every 7-10 days (a little too windy for me the past few days)
the largest spread i've seen is, maybe, 900 to a grand in district 10

Hey to each his own, I wont promote 3k numbers of blocks but I have a really big spread (not close to 3000) at one of my blinds--my best. Say what you will, it works in the right situation. With that being said I also have a blind with less than 50. Diff area, style, needs, ect--all with not stepping on the next guys toes. Decoy wars were more common before spinners--but thats another story
The problem is most duck hunters dont know what good duck hunting really is.

Buckshot have you flown around Norman rd. lately? There used to be a blind out there that put out 5000 had the blind in the center of the check. Don't know if he's still there or not.

no not for awhile, most of my predetermined (since my start point is out of davis) grid searches have been east of there
lately i've been pounding the causeway (from Liberty Is to 80 and then to a little above 5) to narrow down a couple of sleepers that show promise

Hey DUCKSPY,

I like your attitude- wish we had more of the good ole story telling tail gate BS sessions here than all the politics and attacks. I would love to help you put out decoys for a chance to hunt with you and your big spread...I will bring my 2 3/4" #7 Steel and shoot ducks in the face at 15 yards. Let me know when you need a hand to help fill up those checks with decoys. I just hope you rig them with the fast method.

OK,
looks like I pm and payup.... But, you said 3000-4000. Now your at 2200. I'm not going to knit pick over 800 decoys but thats a bit of a discount. I fly over Lambertville quadrant at least once every 2 weeks and I'm not going to count each decoy but I'll take a look.
Were talking ducks here right? Theres at least a half dozen massive snow spreads in that quadrant every year. I have not seen (and maybe I'm not looking in the right spot) anything larger than 600 (guesstimate) in a long time. I thought the big west coast spreads went away. Could be wrong....It happens.

DEAR MR COOT...AS YOU CAN SEE MY BLIND HAD 22OO DECOYS, NOT THE BLIND IN QUESTION....THAT BLIND HAS 3500 TO 4500 DUCK DECOYS, AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABEL TO MISS IT IF YOU FLY OVER IT... ITS EAST OF LAMBERTVILLE SO THATSWHY YOU MISSED IT.....YOU CAN HOLD OFF ON THE SCOTCH UNTIL YOU ARE COMPLETLY SATISFIDED.....ALL THE OTHER POWER BLINDS I KNOW ARE ON THE EAST SIDE....DUCKSPY...

ALRIGHT GUYS, DROP THE TAILGATE AND GATER AROUND, ROLL THE FIRE DRUM CLOSE BY BECAUSE ITS NIPPY OUT.....
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE OFFERS FOR HELP ON MY DUCK BLIND. I REALLY APPRECIATE IT BUT, I HAVE A WORK CREW OF COLUSA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL KIDS THAT WILL WORK FOR SHOT GUN SHELLS AND EXTRA LARGE SANDBAR SUPREME PIZZA'S FROM RIVERBANK PIZZA IN COLUSA. I TAKE THESE KIDS HUNTING ON A REGULAR BASIS AND THEY LOVE TO HELP OUT.

ABOUT THE BLIND.... I FINALLY GOT HARVESTED ON 11/13, THAT AFTERNOON WE CUT THE CHECK, SET UP THE DOG BOX AND THE BLIND COVERS. THE NEXT DAY WE PUT OUT 60 BALES OF HAY FROM 100' BEYOND THE BLIND BACK TO THE END OF THE CHECK WHERE WE WALK IN. BECAUSE THE BLIND GETS HEAVY USE, ITS LIKE A CARPET. YOU CAN GO TO THE BLIND IN TENNIS SHOES. THE WATER STARTED THE NEXT DAY AND AS OF TODAY, MONDAY THE 22ND IT STILL HAS NOT BEEN STOMPED, BUT HOPEFULLY WILL BE TOMORROW. I HAVE 700 DECOYS IN THE BLIND AND 4 ALUMINUM BOATS FULL OF DECOYS ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE NORTH CHECK 300 YARDS AWAY. SO, IT LOOKS LIKE I AM ONLY GOING TO HAVE ABOUT 2500 DECOYS THIS YEAR, UNLESS WE GET REAL FRISKY. I HOPE TO BE HUNTING BY THE WEEKEND. IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT I DO AND WHY I DO IT ON MY BLIND, FEEL FREE TO ASK. I WILL BE LEAVING TOMORROW NIGHT AFTER WORK TO GO TO DUCKVILLE FOR MY 6 WEEK HUNTING VACATION. IF I CAN GET COMPUTER TIME, I WILL GET BACK TO YOU. UNTIL THEN... MAY WE ALL POUND-EM, POUND-EM, POUND-EM AS SOMEONE SAID ON THIS FORUM.... THANK YOU VERY MUCH, DUCKSPY....

Ok boys, here I go... my first post, happy to be here! DUCKDOA at your service. Been huntin' the rice since 1970, as soon as I turned 12 years old at the Berhing Ranch when it was Golden Ram leased. Wow, those ducks did like those fields......
Anyhoo, I love hunting the big rice fields, especially with an East/West check. I am talking at least 1/2 mile long where the big flocks can work in close (hopefully).
First and foremost, let's talk about Mr. Duckspy's tendancy to talk big decoy numbers! I just happened to hunt East of that power blind North of Norman Road at the canal for 3 years and saw the blind he is talking about as I was driving about one day. Holy Moley, they had check decoys on the North check, regular decoys across the whole pond, more check decoys and another check-to- check set full of decoys to the south check, which also had more check decoys on it. So like a typical duck nut, I started counting in groups and then estimated that group times the amount of water left to the check. I stopped counting at 400 and estimated I was at only at 1/6th of the amount with decoys left in the water. So, it truly is in my humble opinion, there was 2,400 dekes and 200 or so check decoys. I actually saw these guys come out one year with a group of ten guys and kids with a couple of huge stakebed trailers 8 feet high.... I heard these boys shoot alot and would see some ducks and geese take a pounding with my binoc's, it would truly suck the ducks in, especially when the flight was marginal. That when I decided to try big numbers when I changed clubs 3 years ago.....
The first year, our group put out almost 700 duck decoys and 135 goose decoys around our 4 man blind. Used a "butterfly" set. It worked so so...lots of birds skirting the edges, but definately drew some long distant birds in and made them feel more confident to work. We got 253 ducks that year, hunted 3 to 4 days a week after the rice was harvested. Also 24 geese.
The second year, put out 950 duck decoys and 60 goose decoys, actually mixed in a couple of snow pairs sporadically in the set. Was told to pull in my dekes by a Rice Master in a single cross line thru the blind, kinda like Duckspy's setup (I think) Wow, got 355 ducks and 29 geese, I love it. Gotta go, my computer is acting up...
I love rice and rice hunters too... but I love rice fed ducks on the BBQ most!
The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Oops that's just ducks and geese...

Ok, I know you have been waiting to hear from someone that actually knows something about duck hunting. Instead of just listening to some guy that thinks he knows it all. First, I taught the Spy everything he knows and got him into all the blinds hes in now.... Except for this website, which he just enlightened me on. My hats off to all past fellow 95970 hunters. Will be great to come shoot again with ya all this January when I come back for a visit. Has been hard to make it back and without the best dog in the world. She was laid to rest on Butte Creek at the site of one of the most incredible hunting clubs in California. She rests with the Woodies and Greenheads. Duckspy, keep you waders up in the blind and don't yank it too hard out there when its too cold. You could break it off like an icicle. And don't forget to forget your duck calls.

Hey, I was hoping to here back from other hunters who use bigger spreads...what works and does not work in the rice fields. Maybe I will see you Duckspy at the Butte City bar and you could give me some hints? I will buy you a beer or some whiskey first so you loosen up those duck billed tight lips.....I'm no dummy. I will just barge in and ask if Duckspy is in the house since I don't know what you look like.

I love RICE Ducks on the BBQ, and I am a master of making even spoonies taste good! I let my friends eat those though and save the mallards and sprig and woodies  for me and my wife.
