How many decoys?

Postby Kali_diver » Mon Dec 09, 2013 9:16 pm

I am just curious what everybody else is doing. I used to hunt out of a aluminum boat with plenty of space for gear so a spread of 40 was the norm. But this year my partner isnt hunting and I dont know anybody else who duck hunts. So I painted my kayack grabbed my gear and headed out. Now that space is limited I only take 8-12 decoys. Usually 4 mallards 4 pintail 4 teal. To my suprise my smaller spread seems to be alot more effective. Anybody else get better results with smaller spreads?

Me and my pops put out 26 decoys. works really well for us. usually hunting more open water. obviously less when we hunt smaller water...probably about 12-15. One time when i was 15 and my dad was 55 we packed out 121 decoys hahaha we had packs on our backs and like 3 bags on the cart. that was a long day

running about 15-20 ducks with 4-6 geese on the side, depending on the spot.

beginning of the season i use about 6-12 decoys, mostly hens, about now, about 15-30 decoys, by the end of the season I'll be around 40-50, just what I found works for me, others don't agree but who cares

By the end of the season I use just a few pairs maybe 8 dekes broken into 4 pairs. Funny how different strokes for different folks is evident in duck hunting too.

I usually hunt a mixed bag: 8 mallards (4 pairs), 4 spoonies (2 pairs) 5 canvasback drakes, and 4 coots. Some days I'll toss out 2-4 canada goose floaters off to the side. That's a max of 25 decoys, but I mostly go for visibility (Canvasbacks, spoon drakes, and Canadas). Seems to work fine for me.

im curious though..the ones that are using canada deeks in their spread...are there actually canadas that fly around there? or are you just putting them there as a confidence builder?

Canadas frequent the area but not in large numbers until late in December. I use them mostly for confidence decoys, but once I start to see the large flocks arriving, I'll set out a bigger Canada spread w/ 6 floaters, 6 land feeders, and 6 shells separate from the duck spread. It has worked in drawing in a few geese and the ducks seem to decoy harder.
