MI Question

Postby coachbob » Fri Jan 17, 2014 12:18 pm

Someone asked me a question today and although I hunt a NVR all the time, I didn't have an answer.

"Can a person with a MI ressie, choose to go to free roam instead of MI blind?"

:help: Thanks

I will ask the question at the refuge this weekend but thought I may get a quick simple answer here.

I was at Yolo earlier this season when an MI resi holder asked that question. The staff said "no", gave him the option of going to the MI Blind or MI Free Roam, not general free roam. May not be the same everywhere, just what happened on this occasion.

I believe that you cannot go general free roam. The MI reservations are issued specifically for just the few MI areas that refuges offer. Otherwise it would give MI an advantage of getting a draw easier and still reaping the benefits of being able to hunt the general free roam.

Overheard someone ask that at I think Gray Lodge, maybe Howard, I can't really remember, but the answer was no there as well. I'm assuming that applies to all refuges, wouldn't really be fair otherwise.

Just an FYI. I did ask at Delevan and they said that an MI hunter could choose general free roam. There is actually a spot to launch a boat for MI hunters into a very popular free roam area. We will still be taking Blind 13D and hoping for the best. I agree it doesn't make sense to let MI hunters into general free roam. Also seems that all refuges should have the same rules, but that might make too much sense.

That can be a good shooting blind.
Good Luck.
