Bugs on Ducks

Postby David121582 » Fri Oct 09, 2009 11:27 am

Have any of you guys notices small bugs on your birds when you are cleaning them. It seems like they come off of ever type of bird that I have cleaned lately so its not from a specific species. Look kinda like small centipieds or something. I always have them crawling on my kinds when im cleaning birds. Just wondering what they are. Thanks

They are the common duck louse or a large duck louse; either way they are parasites that host on foul. They are usually kept in balance through regular preening by wild and domestic duck and geese. Only in uncommon situations like disease outbreaks or infestations will they become a problem. They don't pose any human health problem at all.

Actually, "rice breast" is the common term for a condition called cystosarcoma, or breast sarcoma, which is a parasite that bores and harbors within the breast meat of the duck. It too is safe, but looks nasty! I don't eat it either, just can't go ther. The bugs that crawl off the duck/goose while you clean them are the duck louse. Two different things.

I have yet to come accross the rice breast but don't know if I would eat it if it sounds as bad and you guys describe it.

Although it's guaranteed to creep you out when one crawls up your arm.
