How'd your season go?

Postby duckman27 » Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:50 pm

Well I figured out that duck hunting in Colorado is ALOT different than it was in Mississippi. Not a bad season considering it's my first year here but it could have been better. How did everbody finish up on ducks?
We ended up with:
12 Woodies
16 Mallards
3 Gadwall
7 BWT
1 Golden Eye
3 Buffies
7 Widgeon
1 Pintail
2 Ringnecks
3 Spoonies

I didn't get out all that much this season and when I did it was usually jump shooting. I only shot a handful of ducks over decoys. Mostly mallards, one woodie, a couple widgeon and gadwall and that was about it. The Platte has been piss poor for me over the last couple of years and this year was no exception.

When I moved here last February I was expecting the legendary Plattle River to provide some ducks this year, and it didn't. All I killed was 2 gadwall and a pair of woodies off of it. Is hunting always this poor on it?

Until a 3-4 years ago I was very rarely skunked on the Platte, all on public land. I would usually get 1-2 days/yr that I shot a limit off of it. Now I half expect to get skunked. I don't hunt as much as I used to either and that could have something to do with it. The DOW is also aware of the plight of birds on public lands and has been conducting a 6yr study over the last 3 years, hopefully something productive will come of it. I imagine that it will result in more reservation areas.

We hunted the platte one afternoon and saw hardly any birds and then went about 200 yds away and hunted on the poudre the next morning and killed 7 ducks and a goose. Go figures
